Wherein trof gets a name, hopefully temporary. |
|
We've been waiting to see what 16 month old grandson Jack is going to call us. I think he's settled on "Ganny" for Miz t.
Up until a couple of days ago he just looks at me. I don't have a name yet. I don't particularly want to be Pee-Paw or Poo-Paw or anything else I'd be a little embarrassed to answer to.
It occurs to me that he might not know who these two big people are who visit about every 3 or 4 months. Figured I should explain it to the little guy.
"Jack. Do you know who I am?" Stares at me. "Jack, where's mommy?" Points to mommy. Bright kid, if I DO say so. "Where's daddy?" Points to daddy. Freakin' Einstein, this kid. "OK, Jack. Now listen. I'm you mommy's daddy. See? You have a mommy and a daddy and mommy has a mommy and a daddy. I'm your mommy's daddy. Got it?" Stares at me. Ah well.
Hours later I returned from the grocery store and Jack looks up at me, points, and says "MOMMYDADDY". jeez

2. we follow norwegian custom... sort of |
|
in norway Mor = mother; Far = father; Mother's Mother = Mormor; Mother's Father = Morfar; Father's mother = Farmor; Father's Father = Farmor.
In my family, my fathers parents died when he was a child - so as I grew up there was only one set of grandparents... (sadly both died when I was very young, but my older siblings got to know them). So we had "Mormor and Morfar."
My mother long knew she did not want to be called any variation of: Grandma, Granny, Nanna, Grams, etc. So for the fist grandchild (of my sister) she and dad were - appropriately Mormor and Morfar.
But that stuck for my brother's kids as well - to whom she is (not following norwegian protocal) Mormor.
None the less... Farfar or Morfar - even if not your cultural tradition, might sound a little less jarring than Pee-paw. Besides, he seems to already have picked up the longer variation. :D

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Naw, I don't think so. My uncle insisted that his 3 grandchildren call him Big Daddy and it just sounds contrived. They do it, but they think it's cheesey.

a simple "sir"?
I take it you don't want Grandpa or any variation thereof. Does he have another grandfather around, and what does that one want to be called?

16. I was thinking of "Your Airmanship". |

(I'm a retired pilot.) No, I'm fine with Grandpa or a reasonable derivative. Actually, I'll answer to whatever he comes up with. I just hope we can get past the "mommydaddy" thing. I laughed at that until my sides ached.
There is another grandfather and I don't know if Jack will ever call him anything but "grandfather". I don't think they're gonna be too close. Jack and I are already into the diaper changing (his) bonding thing. He screams at me and I try to get the job done in record time. And welcome to DU. :hi:

Looks like a good day. Sun shining, birds singing, and the bay is like glass. Great Blue Heron fishing for breakfast in the needle rush. And after 4 weeks, I think I'm shaking the Foley Krud. Yeah, it looks like a good morning.

Tell him what you want to be called. My grandparents did it. My aunts and uncles are telling their grand kids. Its either that or be called Mommydaddy the rest of your life. lol Duckie

and Miz t. is turning the house into Disney's Christmas World. Our daughter calls me granddad now, so maybe that'll take.
