Why are they calling it "Torino?"
We don't call other cities in Italy by their native-language names, and we didn't call Turin "Torino" until, well, the Olympics.

1. probably
because of all the stuff that's in the actual city. Kind of dumb to put up signs that have the anglicized name when you're actually IN the city.

4. I believe it's marketing, and Torino does sound better than Turin
The latter is often pronounced in a way that rhymes with urine, whereas Torino sounds like a luscious Italian pastry.

27. bingo
because we (Americans) never use terms like Roma, Milano, Napoli, München, Bruxelles etc etc...

even though, i'll admit: i like to use "München" because it sounds funny to say

30. Roma's a tomato and Milano's a cookie.
If we Americans called those cities by their local names, what would we do for brand names in this country? :P

6. I always liked
to (at least) try to pronounce the cities how they're pronounced originally and even write the names in the original language. From a 'foreign' point of view, you won't find German-speaking people addressing New York as 'Neu York.' It's New York.

7. I've heard Italians (from Italy) refer to it both ways
Torino is more of the universal reference and the Italians know this.

But you know the story about the Mitsubishi Pajero? Nobody in Spain was going to buy the car, because 'pajero' in Spanish means 'wanker.'

11. That stuff never made sense to me.
During the Salt Lake City games, I had a chance to listen to a variety of foreign broadcasts, and in most languages they did their best to pronounce "Salt Lake City" in English instead of making a direct translation into their own language. I found that really odd.

13. What I heard on NPR a couple weeks ago:
The name Turin is associated with the industrial north, pollution, urban overbuild. I don't know who would be fooled but that's what they said.
