Olympics Host City Trivia |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 07:41 PM by DinoBoy
Without googling
1) What year were the first modern Olympics held?
2) St. Louis hosted the Olympics in 1904, but the IOC initially awarded the 1904 games to another midwestern city. Name the city. An extra point if you can say why they moved.
3) In what year did Athens hold an "intercalated" Olympics that the IOC doesn't count as official?
4) This U.S. city is the only host city to vote itself out of hosting the Olympic Games after they were awarded. Name the city and the year the games were to be held.
5) In 1908, this city is the only other city to turn down hosting the Olympic Games after they had been awarded. Name the city and the reason.
6) It's widely known that many western countries boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and many communist countries boycotted the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. What's less well known is that the 1988 Summer Olympics were also boycotted by two countries. Name the countries.
7) The host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be decided next year. Name three of the seven cities bidding for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
8) Although the Olympic Games in 1916, 1940, and 1944 were canceled due to war, host cities were chosen for 1916 and 1940. Can you name the planned host cities?
9) What U.S. city has bid to host the Olympics seven times, but has never been chosen?
10) What three cities have hosted the Winter Olympics twice?

1. The Olympics are my area of expertise... |
|
so I'll try to answer as much of those as I can without using any references:
1. The first modern Olympics were held in 1896 in Athens
2. Chicago, but they were moved to St. Louis because President Roosevelt wanted to hold them in conjunction with the World's Fair that year in St. Louis.
3. 1906
4. Denver for the 1976 Winter Olympics, though I can't remember the reason for it.
5. Rome, because of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius
6. Not sure, but I'll hazard a guess at one of them: North Korea?
7. Salzburg, Austria; Pyeongchang, South Korea; Sochi, Russia
8. I'm not entirely sure.. but I think it was Berlin for both 1916 and 1940.
9. I think I read somewhere that it was Minneapolis, strangely enough.
10. St. Moritz in Switzerland; Lake Placid in New York; and Innsbruck in Austria
