So I am just half spoiled. 3 times over.

Although I shouldn't complain -- people who work in large cities are also spoiled - I have some great little places withint a 3-block radius, including an incredible greek cart, several cheesteak carts, several by-the-pound salad buffets, Japanese, Chinese, vegetarian, and a mall foodcourt. Plus some great sit-down places for when there's time for that.

I generally don't like greek food because I hate feta cheese, but this guy doesn't put feta on anything. The "menu" has only 4 options: - chicken platter - vegetarian platter - chicken gyro (or whatever you call those things) - veggie gyro
With any option, you get marinated chopped cucumbers, falafels, hummus, chicken (don't know what the veggie people get) all wrapped in a giant pita or in a container.
Only downside - horrible long lines.

My new building has a restaurant-quality caffeteria in it. However, my old building's food was almost inedible. You'd have to eat out or brownbag it every day, because the food was detestable.
So, it cuts both ways, but I'd still say "YES", for the most part. :D

11. Ooh, look- here's my dream cafeteria: |
|
It's the one we had back in grade school with the tater tots, the fishwiches, the canned peas & carrots, "hot lunches", baby! The barbecue, the crinkle fries, the fruit cocktail (wait. Fruit cocktail. gross.) Anyway, I'm thinking that grade school food is the source & definition of the term "comfort food".
What do you think? ;-)

|
dislike and distrust of things that swim stems directly from school cafeteria days. blech.
the fried chicken was OK, the meat loaf was passable, turkey was fine but those were not served that often.
most of the food was greasy and you could always smell the bleach they scoured eveuthing with.
my high school was a massive improvement.

The soups today are White Bean and Spinach (Which is always great) and Chicken Noodle.
They make the soups from scratch every morning.
They have Baked Tilapia and Chicken Parmesan. They have baked yellow and green squash.
They have Roast Beef, Spinach and Bleu Cheese sandwhiches, BLTs, and BBQ chicken wraps pre-made, plus a deli counter.
And the salad bar always has a lot of homemade deli salads on it.
Lunch is in half an hour!

|
The only one I know of here is Blue Cross (because sometimes they set up in the courtyard, and are open to the public, and it's a nice place for picnics)
Having a cafeteria is particularly nice when the weather is lousy ("Hey Rose - you going to the cheesesteak guy? Can you get me one with mushrooms? What do you mean, 'stand in the rain and get it your own damned self?'")

We have 45 floors total. With that many people, they need a cafeteria sized space occassionally for really big meetings. Having an actual cafeteria using that space every afternoon helps cost-justify it.
There are occassional benefits to working for huge companies.

"a microwave with a long line of people behind it" or I'll have a lunch that needs to be heated and then I'm told I have to go babysit some grown men out in the field that afternoon. The only choice then is to eat it cold or give it to the dogs when I get home.

fantastic ones.
We'd have shrimp or lobster bisque at least once a week.
Giant salad bars.
Lamb chops - awesome!
Hamburgers, mini-steaks, chinese stir fry, and, hell, both of the cafeterias were like good restaurants, not institutional at all. Fantastic foods. ANd the fresh baked chocolate cookies with chocolate chips - to die for!
And the all-you-can-eat shrimp cocktail and tapas at our Friday happy hours... I miss those days.

I do miss the cafeteria days. We had a great chef at the first firm I worked for, and pretty cheap food considering the quality.
The second firm wasn't quite as good as the first one, but the selections were greater - the difference between having an office of 800 (first firm) and 7,000 (second firm).
Oh, and we had free breakfast at the first firm - donuts, muffins, rolls, eggs, sausages, etc.

|
And for some reason, the breakfast buffet made me think about cruise ships. I looked into working on one in ANY capacity, so I could go see Greece, Spain, etc. But I also learned that that would require living in a mop closet, sleep standing upright, and having people snap their fingers at you.

The best "office food" was in The Colonnade in Golden Valley. (Still, though, there were some days when all I could afford was ramen noodles and coffee, and other days we went across the street to TGI Fridays.)

For a temp assignment. It was rather handy since I had a half hour lunch. It was reasonably priced. I always ate for under $5. At the place I work now, we have a sandwich machine, a snack machine, and a soda machine. Fresh hot food was definitely better.

and we get free lunch coupons at least 2 times a week.. the cafteria management is making a big effort to have things that are heart healthy and diet conscious you can ALWAYS get 1/4 rotisserie chicken and 2 steamed veggies if all else fails the coffee is Starbucks the tortilla soup (every Wednesday) is perfectly awesome as are most of the soups actually.
with a 30 minute lunch, I have no other options unless I have something to bring from home.

The place which is less than from my office has one of the grossest cuisines evah. The only thing I buy there with regularity is coffee. I bring my lunch 90% of the time.

But after a certain amount of time it doesn't look good any longer. Being around all that food all the time has an effect of killing my appetite. Just give me a job making French Fries. I'll lose so much weight you'd think I took up marathon running. ;-)
