Try "Meddle", try "Animals", try "Atom Heart Mother"... hell, even some of "The Wall" is good. But especially make a point to check out "Animals". Great lyrics...
But I think I can understand what you are saying.
One thing that really bugs me is people who claim to really be into the band, but just know Dark Side and The Wall. Some people like that tend to project the "Im a deep rock star" attitude.
Oh well.
Who do you endorse?

20. I am not with you. Pink Floyd can kick your ass, |
|
and they'll kick it worse than Skittles can, and they can kick the ass of any other band out there.
The Floyd are the Kings. They are the George Clinton of bands. They are the Johnny Cash of bands. They are the God Almighty of bands. They are the level to which all bands can only aspire, but never achieve.
They are bigger than big, more over the top than over the top, and all around in a league entirely by themselves. And I really do mean that - there are a few bands I like more (though I do love Floyd), but in all seriousness, Pink Floyd, in terms of putting on a show, is far above anyone else, they are untouchable and unreachable.

I dislike Floyd intensely. I remember someone playing them on my stereo, and I sat there and listened for about half an hour, and thought, Jeezus, this is the same two measures of music over and over again with slight variations! I said, "That's about enough of that!" and shut it off, which caused me to get into a fight with that someone, but oh well.
I also can't stand the Grateful Dead, so maybe it *is* just a generational thing. My much older fiance raves on about how *musical* these bands are, but I'm a fairly (mid-calibre) trained musician, and I just hear warped jazz modalities, and I never had much patience for abstract jazz in the first place.

43. Pink Floyd is all about spectacle |
|
In their early years, they all spent lots of time with tape recorders and the (primitive) synths of the era, with an ear toward getting as big and lush and (might as well say) ponderous a sound as possible. Nowadays, whatever it is they choose to write about-- how weird it was when Syd flipped out, or how ideologues are fucking us over, or how hard it is to reclaim one's innocence and find true love when you're a millionaire rock star-- is going to be delivered in humongous technicolor audio. If you like that kind of thing, nobody does it better than Floyd (although I would argue that Coldplay is trying to position themselves as the Next Floyd). If you think rock should be more of a homespun kinda thing, with more of the sense of sweat and grit and regular-Joe ideology, then you're not gonna have any use for Pink Floyd.
I tried to say this as non-judgmentally as possible. Me, I go back and forth on Floyd, *depending on the actual content of the songs.* I really admire Wish You Were Here and Animals, because I think the subject matter and the musical choices were worthy of the amazing Floyd production. And to prove it's not all about Roger Waters, I liked about half of Momentary Lapse too. But I severely dislike The Wall, I get into arguments about it constantly, I think it's a total piece of crap pandering to a caricature of alienated youth culture, and the music sounds like they did a case study of everybody who was on the radio that year. Your mileage may vary.
And I love the Syd Barrett stuff, but that was certainly an entirely different era, and effectively an entirely different band. One cliche that I think has a lot of validity is that Floyd has always been a tug of war between the musicians (Barrett, Gilmour) and the architects (Waters, Mason)-- but where I differ with most analysts is that I think it varies album by album as to who's winning.

Seriously. Not everyone wants to hear 20 minutes of music before they finally get to the first lyrics of a song. Pink Floyd certainly isn't a 'quick musical fix' band by any stretch of the imagination.
My two cents worth.

55. How can you hate Pink Floyd?!?!?! |
|
Their music is so rich and deep. I find that I can sit back and listen to them for hours, often musing over the deeper meaning of their songs. Rolling Stone ranked Dark Side no. 43 in the top 500 albums of all time!! I noticed that most of the haters out there never gave any reasons as to why they hate them. Have any of you actually listened to their stuff thoroughly? I know there music is a bit complicated, maybe its just a little too complicated for you to understand. I don't think its at all necessary to have done acid or "marijuana" to fully apreciate thier music, although the affects of these drugs definately changes your preception and focus of the music for the better. I think thats why often people will ask if you've tried these drugs before listening to Pink Floyd, because it greatly enhances your experience of the band and makes it just that much more enjoyable. So I ask of all you haters out there to sit down when you have some time and actually listen to thier stuff intently. And maybe if you happened to have just puffed down a marijuana cigarette, or just dabbled in some psychedlic, put them on and see if your perception of them changes.
