I spent over 24 hours without power in a 35 degree house... |
|
With all the wind here in upstate NY, the power went out sometime on Friday. Then the temperatures dropped dramatically. Problem is, I left the windows open when I went to work, since it was so warm and the house was colder than it should have been by the time I got here.
My hubby is out of town for the weekend and I was thinking of just reading and relaxing. Well, I ended up under layers and layers of blankets with the dog under them with me, shivering all night Friday night.
I will admit that it was taxing and I had a moment about 4 am when I could not feel my face.
Glad that is OVER!

11 days with no power after an ice storm. The city got power in 3 days but the meter was ripped off the side of my house when the tree limbs fell on the line.
I'm glad you're okay. You appreciate heat and light, but REALLY appreciate it when you don't have it.
I hope you begin to feel your toes soon!

Did you have a fireplace or some other source of heat? Was this back in Jan of 1999? I seem to remember something like that...

The south was hit by a terrible ice storm. I didn't have a fireplace. We ended up (after day 3) sleeping on the floor wherever someone would take us in. It was just my daughter and me then and she was 6. I still panic when I hear ice in the forecast!
It wasn't nearly as cold as it was for you, but because we had no water (pumping station was down too), we brought in snow and let it melt to pour in the back of the toilet so it could be used.
Ack! Makes me start to twitch just thinking about it.
I was amazed at how bad the NE got hammered this time.

Anyhow, lesson learned for sure.
Husband thinks we need to immediately go purchase a generator. I'm not too sure.

6. It would be wiser to rent one. |

unless you're in an area prone to blackouts.
