Internship in Bremerton, WA....Looking for info of area
Hey everyone, I'm currently scheduled to take an internship in Bremerton, WA (across the Sound from Seattle) with the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service through the Indian Health Service. I haven't received the exact dates I'll be there yet, but it'll most likely be from mid-May to early/mid-August.

I'd appreciate any help or information of the area, cause I have to find housing there of course and I'm just really interested in cool things to do near there or sights to see on my time off. Oh, and any help with traveling there would be cool too...I'm driving from Bowling Green, OH...a cool 2500 miles :( I wish I could have bought a Prius...:)

Preemptive Danke!

1. The no hassle route would be to drive north to Toledo,
get on I-90 headed west and keep driving west on I-90 until you get to Seattle. Then you catch a ferry across the Bay and Bob's your proverbial uncle.

9. Cool thanks! I figured I'd probably take I-90 all the way...
Seem'd like the fastest way to get there.

2. Bremerton is pretty cool.
Very military town, but you are close to the Olympic mountains, Hood Canal (great scuba diving), Seattle, the Cascades, etc.

3. Bremerton is a good place to live
A sizeable town, close to Seattle (a one hour ferry ride, or about an hour by car), but has a kind of small-town feel to it. I lived there when I was a kid, and it's grown quite a bit since then, but still a good place. And, as another poster said, it's close to Seattle, the mountains, the ocean, etc.

The ferry to Seattle docks at the downtown waterfront, so you could opt to take your car or not on the ferry. One thing to do for sure is go the the Pike Place Market, which is just up the hill from the ferry dock.

If you want a Seattle tour guide, just PM me, and I'd be happy to show you around, or give you more specifics as to what to see here.

10. Thanks SeattleGirl!
A ferry right to downtown, nice, I'm not a big fan on driving in the city :D I'll have to check out that market too, sounds great! I'm looking forward to going out there more and more now!

5. Bremerton's a good place to reside - just ask Mxpx
When I meet a special girl
She always lives somewhere else in the world
Don't want to call her on the phone
Wanna talk to her when I'm at home

Move to Bremerton - we'll hang out
Move to Bremerton - we'll go all out
Move to Bremerton - will you be mine?

I'll change the street signs you drive down
So you end up in my town
I'll re-draw the maps all one by one
So they all lead to Bremerton

Drop out of school and run away
Quit your job, you got a place to stay
Pack your bags and hitch a ride
Bremerton's a good place to reside

If you own a brain and use it too
You gotta know that I have a crush on you
I'm a sucker for a level headed girl with a pretty smile
She gots to have ideas, yeah, and she gots to have style

Drop out of school and run away
Quit your job, you got a place to stay
Pack your bags and hitch a ride
Bremerton's a good place to reside

But seriously...Bremerton's nice, and it's just an hour-long ferry ride to Seattle.

7. The navy has a base there
I live in Seattle and have driven through Bremerton while on the way to other places on the Olympic Peninsula. It struck me as kind of rundown and not as prosperous as many of the cities/towns in the area. But it sounds like you have a job already so that is not a concern for you. It also sounds like you have a car so you can go other places for entertainment.

8. come on up to the olympic peninsula
some places are nice around bremerton, others are bummerton. Military, close to Seattle and Tacoma, can get into the woods and mountains and to the ocean quickly. "The ocean" is not Puget Sound but the outer coast of WA. Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival is first wkend in Sept and really fun.

11. Cool, I plan on making my way out and about through the peninsula.
I'll be out there visiting the Indian reservations out there promoting health initiatives and conducting food and sanitation inspections to report to their tribal goverments, but I do want to head out there on my personal time. Anything I can really do on my spare time for just the weekend? I know I won't be there for the Wooden Boat Festival, I'll be leaving in August to head back here to finish my degree.

12. Sol Duc hot springs, outside PtAngeles is fun
Private consignment place in Ntl Park so good sized trees. A nice NP car campground, lots of hikes around there (can backpack if you like). The resort has cabins for rent, 2 hot pools, 1 kiddie pool, 1 swimming pool, small dining facility.

13. A. When you go outside the city limits of Seattle
Even if it's just Burien, you might as well be living in Oklahoma.

B. Live, if you can, isolated, and in a trailer. Grow various kinds of peppers in flowerpots. Get a hobby VW.

C. Fort Flaggler is pretty darn cool.
