Edited on Thu Feb-23-06 01:00 PM by DaveTheWave
I've always drove smaller, inexpensive cars or trucks because they're cheaper and conserve more energy but before I was married and dating so-called "liberal" women they would always piss and moan about riding in a small car and not wanting to be seen in one.

Bitch about saving the environment all week but party in big cars, SUV's and boats all weekend.

My guess was that in case another woman they knew saw them around town that they wanted to look like they're dating a rich republican.

But now when we buy a new "small car", she gets the new one and I get the older one. We actually want to retire one day to a place where we can walk or ride a bike everywhere.

6. that's how me and my SO are
we had a car- that his mom bought him years ago thinking it would give him incentive to get a license- lol. our old roommate used it so when he moved out we sold the car since we don't plan to drive for a long time
it shocks everyone- we get a lot of "wow"'s and at the same time get called irresponsible by certain family members- mainly my SO's dad
we're just lucky we got everything we need in our town :)

8. Disqualifies everyone no, but an anti-SUV hypocrite yes
The ones who don't want to be seen arriving at an environmental march in a little car or the Barbra Streisand types who don't want anyone driving SUV's except themselves.
To me a car is a car to get me from point A to point B, not a status symbol and not a toy. I've got nothing against SUV's, big cars but I've never bought one just to make me look important or to have more room and horsepower beyond my needs. My Toyota Camry is the largest car I've owned in over 18 years but before that I had the typical larger cars that were built in the late 60's and early 70's.

26. There's a world of difference between preferring something ...
...and complaining about and claiming not to want to be seen in the alternative. I certainly have automotive preferences, but to complain to a date that his car isn't good enough and that you are embarrassed to be seen in it is rude and tacky, IMO. I don't that is very "lady-like," liberal or otherwise.

11. I guess I'm just so-called
because we have a Nissan Armada. It is a family car for four adults and two infants. We sometimes pull a tractor on a trailer with it.

We're all big people, height and weight both. But mainly I don't like the safety records of smaller cars. My son is a paramedic and will only drive a pickup truck. These two babies are the next generation and I want them behind a lot of steel and motor with airbags out the wazoo.

Now, I personally don't drive so I don't have my own car. And we don't do boats. Does that count?

13. Naw, I'm just going after the hypocrites and I've dated a few
I've never dated a conservative type woman even when I was a republican. Everyone can drive what they want but when "I" say I'm in favor of protecting the environment and conserving energy, "I" walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
Being an environmentalists only when it's convenient or only when bitching about high gas prices is not taking the cause seriously.

31. Probably my biggest gift to the environment
is the scores of children I yearly work into a fever pitch around Earth Day. I take it very seriously and totally indoctrinate the poor little things and I believe I am creating a mini generation of environmental nazis. But that's okay. I often neglect to recycle, but I can tell you that none of my kids do!

Big sound system, wall-to-wall carpeting, nice velour seats. It gets about 20 mpg.

It's also 14 years old and paid for. I'll take that over a monthly car note any day.

When it is time for me to get another car, I will get a something like a used Subaru Forrester or a Honda CR-V. Anything that I don't have to borrow money to own.

I am also a liberal. :P

edit: I live in a rural area. Going anywhere: my job, the store, entertainment requires that I drive. No where is within walking distance of my house. I wouldn't want to live that close in anyway. But, I do make sure I consolidate trips as much as possible.

It's not that big either (it's a Saturn wagon) but the milage is decent (not that I go anywhere,) it's made in America by union labor, I din't have to go into debt to buy it and rather than wasting resources on a new vehicle I bought it used. Liberal enough for me. :)

There's a darling little Mini I've got my eye on, as well as a diesel Jetta.

But alas... what we have is what we have.

And when I was dating, I was usually the one with the car. So I don't care about that. As long as he speaks my dialect of geek, I could care less about his possessions. Or hers for that matter.

22. We only have two cars because we work in two different
suburbs, otherwise we'd have only one (we did for many years). But I hate planet-mobiles and refuse to ever own one. I feel guilty about our Subaru because it's not as fuel efficient as I'd like, but it was the best compromise between what we needed to have feature-wise (lots of cargo space, good for inclement weather and road trips, safe, reliable) and what we wanted size/efficiency-wise. I make up for it by carpooling with two other coworkers. When my husband and I are going somewhere together we generally drive our little Civic (unless we're buying a lot of groceries or the weather is bad).

If Subaru came out with a hybrid Outback wagon I would be ALL over that. When we need to replace the Civic we'll get a hybrid, but hybrids weren't available at the time.

Nothing wrong with buying a vehicle within your means, nothing wrong with buying the car you like, etc. But to buy a Hummer, ride in it alone and bitch about high gas prices, ANWR drilling and global warming at the same time makes a person a certified dip-shit.

I see some people up above are getting a little squirmy though. I've insulted nobody personally but I see some who must have an SUV with a yellow ribbon on it getting a little bit pissy.

30. Small car man here.
My wife and I have to commute separately, so we supplemented a reliable little Paseo with a Maxima, which turned out to be something of a gas guzzler and a maintenance whiner. With those cars becoming twleve and seven years old, it was time to replace them. I got a Prius, and talked my wife into satisfying her V6 sedan desire with a hybrid Accord.

When two tractor-trailers totaled the Accord, my wife walked away without a scratch--so she insisted on another. Good car.

34. The man I married didn't even own a car.
I drove a Ford hatchback with a five speed. Never bothered either one of us much...

Later, after we had Material Girl, we needed more room to haul a child and all the accompanying stuff, so we got a Buick Century (poverty model, I might add!) that was about 12 years old. We drove that car WAY past the point of social embarrassment. Finally, our mechanic told us not to even bring it back--it was too far gone.

We now have two cars, a Ford Escort Wagon that is about 14 years old, and a Buick Century that was just barely made in this century...

Nah. I'm not a car snot. Neither is my husband.

You now have a perfect example of how easy getting rid of a shallow and materialistic person is.

4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive. Before that I had a VW Jetta. I live way up in the mountains and need my truck just to get to work, shopping and to do laundry in town about 30 minutes away. Since it's 4 cylinder, though, it's not so bad. Although if I was shopping for a new one, I would get one with all wheel drive. Driving a rear-wheel drive pickup on these roads can be scary sometimes, even with studded snow tires and 240 pounds of sand in the back.
