5. A few suggestions--
"Vertigo", "The Devil and Daniel Webster", both the Olivier and Branagh versions of "Henry V", and John Williams' score for the George C Scott-Suzannah York "Jane Eyre".

34. I STILL have never seen "Devil and Daniel Webster." It never comes
on TV. I know there is a Criterion DVD version, but it is expensive (as all the Criterion discs are).

Some Kind of Wonderful.

Breakfast Club.

89. Got the REPO MAN disc in my gear bag right now
Thought the remix of Iggy Pop's title track was lacking, but otherwise, it's a great CD.

I love the acoustic version of Circle Jerks' When the Shit Hits the Fan better than the original electric version. And it's on the RM disc, and it's all mine.

76. Fifthed. Have you seen "Down from the Mountain"?
Well worth checking out if you haven't:

On May 24, 2000, the historic Ryman Auditorium was booked to offer Nashvillians an evening of sublime beauty. Label executives and soundtrack producers so loved the music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? that they brought it to life as a benefit concert for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen loved it so much that they hired famed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to record the show for posterity. The concert that unfolded that night was one of the greatest musical moments in the annals of Music City. Performers: John Hartford, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Chris Thomas King, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, Union Station, Colin Linden, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, The Peasall Sisters, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, The Whites.

It was the great Bernard Hermann's last and possibly, Psycho aside, his best.

100. Glass
Heh, if that's the harshest dig you've ever heard on Glass, you haven't talked about him to enough people;)

The thing that I really find impressive about him is that he was able to build up a completely original and captivating rhythmic and structural language from scratch in the early '70s, and then weld it onto traditional Western harmony. I especially love Einstein on the Beach and Music in 12 Parts. But at a certain point in the '80s, he settled on a recognizable "sound," (triplet arpeggios, pulsing strings, certain types of chord changes, etc.) and dropped a lot of the rhythmic complexity and variety that gave his earlier music its life. It still often works in context (as in soundtracks), and I find it appealing at a surface level, but it is not very interesting IMO.

Still, he's one of a very few popular artists that are keeping the whole Western instrumental music tradition from turning completely into a static museum, so I think he's pretty cool overall.

111. that's probably true
my husband was a big fan of his, I like his choral work to some extent, but the overly repetitive quality of some of his compositions does not intrigue me as much as more variety might.

I suspect that the people I know probably aren't as well versed in even avant-garde classical composition to critique a lot of his work.

Well, best soundtrack album anyway. For the most effective use of soundtrack, A Clockwork Orange, with Excalibur a strong second.

81. I Wanna Get Next to You is the most unappreciated love song ever.
And the whole thing sounds fresh today--and the movie's fresh too.

Even my 9 year old son loves both the movie and the soundtrack.
