Grizzly Man (2005)
Anyone see this documentary? I must say, I believe that Timothy Treadwell definitely had his heart in the right place, yet his tactics were certainly questionable. Using the same theory that Timothy used in defense of the territory can be utilized against him when he began to alter the landscape in order for the salmon to run for the bears.

Thoughts?

1. I watched a bit on Discovery last night.
He should not have lived up close with those bears. Getting them used to humans and thinking humans aren't a threat was just plain stupid, even though I do think he loved the bears.

4. Agreed. And I would argue he did a disservice to the greens
Basically, by being the raving lunatic who tried to become a bear, and instead got eaten, he gave anti-environmentalists fodder to paint us all as Timothy Tredwell.

His heart may have been in the right place, but his mind clearly was not.

6. I saw it this weekend. I was rather troubled by it.
Like you said, his heart is in the right place, but I think he may have harmed his cause. He sounded mentally ill to me, which in an of itself does not negate his passion, but I think he may have been seeing or hearing something in these bears that was really in his mind. It didn't seem like he was taking the inherent risk very seriously, and he didn't sem to be taking a very informed approach. He kept talking in this weird baby voice about them, giving them weird nicknames and reprimanding them like little kids. I tell my cat I love him about 10 times a day but there was something odd about Timothy screaming that in a stage whisper to the bears.

And I REALLY could not stand Werner Herzog's narration. Even worse were the very contrived scenes with the coroner and the ex-girlfriend.

I found the whole thing deeply disturbing.

9. That's a good way to describe it.
His childish demeanor was odd. It was obvious his friends loved the guy very much and took his quirks in stride, but didn't pretend what he was doing wasn't dangerous.

Herzog was bearable (no pun intended...seriously) and it was really eerie when he was listening to the tape. I have to admit, I was one of those people who wanted to hear the tape until I saw his reaction from listening to it.

7. Watched all 3 hours, interesting guy, but a little quirky.
My wife & I talked about it afterward and thought he came across as a little eccentric. His cause was noble, but when he tried touching the bears and the foxes it seemed like he was playing with fire.

We noted that during his time there he was part of the food chain. His demise was sad, but somewhat predictable.

Great documentary.

...death. Like I said I watched off and on but I assume they didn't play it, did they?

I'm sorry - I know that is sick but it was only the audio...

11. it was like a countintelpro project to make environmentalist look nutty
Every activist in the show acted like they short a few marbles. When the dude went up to wild grizzlies and started poking them in the nose, all the while talking about how much he loves and respects them...well, it was just too much for me.

Getting the local running commentary definitely added to it. :-)

13. i could only take a couple minutes of treadwell
i found him completely self-aborbed and self aggrandizing. he was annoying and i think the only reason the bear ate him was to make him stop talking.
