Amazing Race starts tonight. |

None of that family crap-just racers.
Over 63,000 miles in less than 30 days. Sounds like a good season.

|
My best friend teaches social studies. She tapes the show and airs it for her class every Friday. She gives them handouts of maps for each area they are travelling to before the watch the show and randomly picks a student to mark it on the classroom map.
She said that since she started doing this her classes geography grades have gone up.

It would have been a fantastic "Nyah, nyah" in Colin's face. Even Phil talks about Charla being one of his all-time favorite racers. I'm sure it helps that Mirna obviously had the hots for Phil.

We'd either kill each other or win the whole thing. He's unemployed for the moment so the money is tempting to him. And spending two years stationed in Germany would help us if we went to a Germanic country. Plus, he has friends all over Europe who would probably try to help us cheat if they could.

I'd say he wins for the most annoying, most hated of all racers.
And FE had a few annoying kids on there, a RR family, etc. The only bright spot in FE was Marion Paolo. Yelled at her kids, told them to be polite, smacked one of them in the back of the head, etc.
She was brilliant and she is a huge fan of the show. When she realized that FE was only in N. America she yelled out something about how that sucked and she wanted to go to New Zealand.

several religious hypocrites certainly come to mind. Colin and Christie could contend for the worst; he was a scumbag and she wasn't really any great prize either. He is responsible, however, for perhaps the most memorable line uttered in TAR: 'MY OX IS BROKEN!"

She teaches spec. ed. and most have no interest in geography. Grades in geography have risen because of her doing this.
She also tapes some episodes of Survivor-usually the first one and one where there is interaction w/ a native of the region. They get another lesson in geography, culture, history and even psychology from a tv show.
Anything she can do she will.

It's very fast-paced and exciting, and you learn a lot about interacting with cultures around the world. The stunts they have the couples do usually have some sort of local flair to them (e.g., in Germany, making bratwursts vs. serving beer at a beer hall). It's just a lot of fun.

It used to air only during the summer but became so popular they started airing it in the fall and the spring.
Yes it is reality tv but it is the best of the genre. 11 teams of 2-the people on each team have a prior relationship such as husband and wife, best friends, exspouses, father and daughter, etc-race around the world and complete tasks that are based on popular or famous activities in each country they are in. They are given a set amount of money for each leg of the race and the last team to arrive at each pitstop (rest stop) is eliminated.
The prize for the first time to finish the race? A million dollars.

IIRC, Charla's married, and she and her husband run a sporting goods store.

But most of the TAR boards hated her.
The team that made me feel the best when they won was Uchenna and Joyce. They needed the money since they had both lost their jobs and they wanted to either adopt or try in-vitro one more time. I read recently that they have both been popular choices on the lecture circuit and plan on trying for a baby in another year.

Strength and size were not their advantage, as it is w/ some teams. Charla was always willing to work hard and Mirna spoke a few different languages. She was also excellent w/ juggling around flight schedules.
I was extremely pissed whenever I heard Colin yell crap about targeting the "midget" or when Christie blocked the doorway at the airport to keep them from getting a cab. Charla showed Christie-she ducked under her arms and got out.
