Glitter jailed for abusing girls

British former rock star Gary Glitter has been jailed for three years after a Vietnamese court found him guilty of sexually abusing two young girls.

The jury found that Glitter, real name Paul Gadd, had molested the girls, aged 11 and 12, at his home in the resort town of Vung Tau, southern Vietnam.

The 61-year-old, who claimed he was innocent, said the "unbelievable" verdict was part of a "conspiracy".

He will be deported after he has served his sentence, possibly back to the UK.

3. May be some time in a Viet prison will straighten this guy out
I doubt it. But, he won't be getting any superstar treatment there.

7. According to Australian and Korean news broadcasts
The girls spoke on his behalf asking for lienency, which apparantly works under Vietnamese law (If the wronged party speaks on your behalf the court takes that into consideration). He gave each girl's family like $1000.

6. Maybe his previous arrest for child pornography was also a set up?
Or perhaps the Vietnamese - horror of horrors - actually have a functioning legal system that can prosecute the same kind of cases that the Americans (y'know, the real people) can prosecute? :sarcasm:

8. You can drop the sarcasm bit
I work for a company that has extensive dealings with 3rd world countries. Rich foreigners are often targets of extortion in one form or another, and in court cases the locals usually win, regardless. We've had to pull out of some countries because it was so bad. Excuse me for being cynical.

9. His previous conviction was in the UK.

And, no, it wasn't a set-up. One of his victims was his own daughter's best friend, and she testified against him. He sexually assaulted her when she was 13.

Edited to add that it pisses me off that Gary Glitter is still picking up a hefty sum in royalties because his song "Rock and Roll" is played repeatedly at virtually every sporting event in the United States and no one seems to mind that it's by a convicted, repeat offender, serial child molester.

Edited further to add that, before he went to Vietnam, Gary Glitter had earlier taken up residence in Thailand after being released from prison in the UK. He was booted out of Thailand because of child molestation.

12. I can't fucking stand that "Rock and Roll" song
And yes, it goes through my mind every time it's played that all the drunken bastards in the stadium are hootin' and hollerin' along with a song by a child-molesting freak.

15. I agree that Glitter is scum...
But I think this is a pretty ridiculous statement:

Any work of art, whether a song, a poem, a novel, or a painting, stands on its own merits, and not those of its creator. Geoffrey Chaucer was an accused rapist; Sir Thomas Malory (who wrote Le Morte d'Arthur) was a convicted rapist; Leonardo da Vinci was a pederast; there's evidence that Wilfred Owen was a paedophile; Ezra Pound was a fascist who propagandised on behalf of Mussolini; Louis-Ferdinand Celine was a virulent racist, anti-Semite, and Vichy collaborationist (and these are just the first few I can think of)...in your opinion, ought we to forgo any enjoyment of their artistic works because of distaste for some of the unsavoury details of their biographies? Seems a little extreme, if you ask me.

14. I
can think of other things I'd rather call you...but I would be removed.
Justice exists in other countries, under other laws and under different sytems. Cultural racism is unattractive in a civilized person. "Skeptical", indeed.

10. That's a slap on the wrists in Vietnamese legal terms.
If I recall, child molestation is punishible by death there.
