"Jesus, Take the Wheel"

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
She was going way to fast
Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on

Oh, Jesus take the wheel
Oh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel
Oh, take it, take it from me
Oh, why, oh

23. I have to change to a different channel every time
that some comes on. I cannot stand that shallow, hollow overly-devotional type of thinking.

And to think, that's actually a popular song among many of the sheep...

3. Is that the whole song?
There aren't any more verses? Slipping on ice and driving too fast gets this lady born again? What the fuck?

And by the way, I would recommend maybe trying to steer yourself out of the skid before you reliquish all your control over to Jesus, because the almighty 'aint going to keep you from smashing into some other poor schmuck who's just unlucky enough to be driving in your vacinity.

Poor songwriting is rampant in Christian contempo music. It's always so fucking lazy.

that's it.

Am I the only one getting tired of not having any real resolutions in this whole religion thing?? Is it just me? It's like they just want it to keep going on and on and on like a soap opera or RASSLIN' or sumptin'.

84. Well, actually when you go into a skid
you are probably better off letting go then steering against it, at least. Of course you should steer into it, but this way you have at least a chance.

And I agree that Christian contemporary music sucks. Which is strange, given the upsurge in devotion, you'd think somebody would write something decent. Evidence that the upsurge is not authentic, perhaps?

4. I heard this crap last night on American Idol and
was amazed by the fact that the character being sung about, in the first verse, "didn't have time to cry", but had plenty of time to throw her hands up in the air and ask:

"Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel"

24. I too, thought she sounded nice, but the lyrics, for me,
are kind of stupid. And I am not saying these because of the songs religious connotations. I'm pointing out a flaw in the songwriting. I was an English major. Who has read a lot of poetry.

But, maybe if you heard her sing it, you'd feel differently. Maybe not, but she sang it with conviction, if that matters.

18. Well of course they are
they don't have any choice now do they?

I could go off on the force feeding of products especially music down the mass's throats but I won't. We all succumb to it so it's not like I am looking down my nose at country music fans or whatever they call that "music" these days (sounds nothing like C&W to me).

I'm sure she did sing it with conviction. It was pretty clear that she was going to win last time from about the third week. She is ready made to fill the prescribed slot.

that is what is expected of her, and even though it probably is, I think she believes what the message of the song is, and that makes a difference to me! It wasn't "fake".

123. But the song's message is pure rot.
God, that's simply awful.

Typical of contemporary Christian music - heavy-handed, artless, and with a theology that's just as thin and weak as the assholes who push it.

Why does it have to be Christmas Eve? Why does a baby need to be involved? Why does there have to be a REAL road?

When I first read the chorus part (I saw it before the rest), I thought, "How imaginative and deep" and "what a wonderful metaphor".

And then I read the whole thing, and it's just shit. It's pure shit.

Obviously, she is another in a long line of singers who have a career because of their looks. "Yep, she's marketable - we'll turn her into a singer."

But I won't go too far in criticizing the lyrics lest someone bring up my generation's "MacArthur's Park" or perhaps "American Woman."

122. Not THIS version!
American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come hanging around my door
I don't want to see your face no more
I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you
Now woman, stay away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come knocking around my door
I don't want to see your shadow no more
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, I said get way
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come hanging around my door
Don't want to see your face no more
I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away
American woman, listen what I say
American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be

I gotta go
I gotta getta away
Think I gotta go
I wanna fly away
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
Bye bye, bye bye
Bye bye, bye bye
American woman
And you're no good for me
And I'm no good for you
I look you right straight in the eye
And tell you what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna leave you woman
You know I gotta go
I'm gonna leave you woman
I gotta go
I gotta go

I gotta go
American woman
Yeah

I never could figure out how they were MY ghetto scenes and MY war machines and men didn't have anything to do with it. Geez!

I think the hypocrisy of it being about Jesus, along with the sucky sucky lyrics, along with the extreme marketing machine of American Idol (which is not, after all, a platform to launch religious/country musicians)... was the point. But that's just me.

Last year, my 13-year-old niece and her friend were watching AI with my sister. My Growly Bearded Bear came out and sang. Niece to Friend: "My aunt loves him." Friend to Niece: "I thought your aunt's gay." Niece: "She is." Friend: "I'm confused." Niece: "Me too." My sister talked to my niece later to get her to understand you can thin km someone is sexy and not "change"m orientation.

I love my Growly Beardy Bear....

why is it hypocrisy for it to be about Jesus?
American Idol presumably launches the best singer, be that a religious or country singer or whatever.
I am not sure why the lyrics suck so much either. For pop music, they are probably middle of the road - not the best, not the worst.

114. Just a hypothesis, not a conclusion
You have to make an intuitive leap to a hypothesis. It is suggested by the attitude of others in this thread, and on DU, and there is no other clearly discernable reason for disparaging C grade lyrics as if they deserved an F- (although one could argue that even the "average" pop lyric deserves an F, and I am sure Rabrrrrr would, and so would an Opera singer (we need an icon here for a slow train coming ))

liberal person of faith, but as I said below, it didn't offend me. I can see a situation where prayer would pretty much be the last resort. If the song said that you should neglect personal responsibility, it would really be in fundie territory. :puke:

I was looking at the American Idol questionnaires for the girls, and Katharine and the other few women who didn't mention Jesus or God in their questionnaires (I probably wouldn't either) seemed to enjoy it, too.

and that would drive my opinion. I can deal with lame lyrics if it is good music. She can deliver the goods in her chosen style, that's for sure.

I enjoy some country music but the older stuff and blue grass. I'm not so hot on the scream fests of today's pop-country. But whatever gets you through the night, huh?

9. Jesus rides beside me; he never buys any smokes
"Can't Hardly Wait" - Replacements

I'll write you a letter tomorrow
Tonight I can't hold a pen
Someone's got a stamp that I can borrow
I promise not to blow the address again

Lights that flash in the evening,
Through a crack in the drapes

Jesus rides beside me
He never buys any smokes
Hurry up, hurry up, ain't you had enough of this stuff
Ashtray floors, dirty clothes, and filthy jokes

See you're high and lonesome
Try and try and try

Lights that flash in the evening,
Through a hole in the drapes
I'll be home when I'm sleeping
I can't hardly wait

I can't wait. Hardly wait.

70. It's just a song
I think some people just like to whine. Commercial music has been around for a long time, it's just a form of entertainment. Reading some of these comments makes me think that some people live and die by what other people like. If you don't like the song, the singer, the lyrics, the music and whatever, then don't friggin' listen to it.

If you feel that it makes you look like you have the ultimate taste in art to knock everything you don't quit get, then go ahead and post, but it doesn't look that way to everyone.

83. Those are quite possibly
the. lamest. lyrics. EVER.

This isn't meant as a Jesus bash, but for pete's sake...sliding on black ice makes her find Jesus? Seriously?

I've skidded on many patches of ice and I can tell you it's not a "find Jesus" kind of moment. And for the love of God don't take your hands off the wheel! A little prayer while steering into the skid isn't a bad idea, but that doesn't really merit a song either.

It's country/pop drivel that happens to have a religious connotation. Unfortunately, a large percentage of Christian music is that way. The involvement of religion isn't the problem. The problem is that the lyrics are completely uncreative.

I don't mind Carrie Underwood, but that song simply sucks.

how long the skid lasted have to do with anything? It's never a good idea to take your hands off the wheel and hope Jesus saves your ass. That's not really how he works. If it were, nobody would get into car accidents. You pray that he guides you...but you've got to be the one with your freaking hands on the wheel.

Stupid lyrics. Stupid message.

I understand thinking the lyrics suck. That is your opinion. I understand not liking her or any of her music. I understand not agreeing with the message, but no need to call it stupid. And I believe it is more symbolic of letting Jesus guide her life than actually guiding the car.

But Christians believe (or most) that we should let Jesus guide our life. Live for Him. And that is what I think the song is about. So therefore, I think whether or not the lyrics suck or the song sucks, the message is a good Christian message. My definition of Christianity has ABSOLUTLEY nothing to do with any song.

As a Christian, it is my goal to follow the teachings of Christ.
Whereas the message of the song, as I read it, is that she wouldn't have even gotten herself in the position of sliding on the ice if only she had been a better Christian. And I don't see that jibing with my beliefs at all.

But as Shell Beau said, both the part about being scared and the person having a Christian upbringing salvage the lyrics. And even I, being a liberal Catholic, can get something out of it. Not a lot of Christian country songs appeal to me.

So we just come from different perspectives.

130. That's the phrase I've been looking for for years!
Thank you!!

Describes the whole mega-church evangelical Christian movement - WalMart sprituality!

Perfect!

Where it's more about the size of your house, the style of your hair, and the pyramid scheme that you work for and the soccer team your kids are on, than it is anything about connecting with or touching the Divine.

It's WalMart spirituality! It's the commoditization, the final step in American culture, finally, of religion. Of turning Christianity into a product to be sold and advertised and gosh darn isn't all just so swell that we're all using the same product.

No. We can't stop here. This is bat country.

Or, we can bring it back on track with another Raoul quote:

You better take care of me Lord, if you don't you're gonna have me on your hands.
