Who else has read Harlan Ellison's Deathbird Stories?
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 10:19 PM by jus_the_facts
...loved this quote by Robert Heinlein 1973 in the front...

"Men rarely (if ever) manage to dream up a god superior to themselves. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child."

...the stories in this book are FAR OUT...just :wow:

H.E.'s warning in the front of the book...
It is suggested that the reader not attempt to read this book at one sitting. The emotional content of these stories, taken without break, may be extremely upsetting. This note is intended most sincerely, and not as hyperbole. :D

6. I'm a HUGE HE fan. I met him at a Literature Con in Bellevue
Washington last fall. Very interesting guy, and a spellbinding speaker. Just mesmerizing.

Oh, and he wasn't kidding when he wrote the warning for "Deathbird Stories". They were very emotionally draining to read.

My hobby is collecting autographed first-editions of his books. I've got about nine or ten, including my most prized possession: "Strange Wine".

10. many years ago
altho i think the warning silly unless he meant the book for a teen audience, i was disappointed to come back to it years later & realize that it didn't have the punch i remembered

11. I think it was meant as a warning towards anyone easily offended....
...about their religious leanings.

12. I've read pretty much every published work of Ellison's
'Deathbird Storie's' is probably his best overall collection other than the omnibus retrospective 'The Essential Ellison'.

14. Try His Essay Collections
Try to find yourself a copy of 'An Edge in My Voice'. This is a book of essays written primarily during the '80's. As good as Ellison's short fiction is I think he is an even better essayist. He does a pretty nifty job of pulling the cheery veneer off of the Reagan years. Not that all of the essay's are political, in fact many aren't, but they are well worth reading.
