1. HAND DRAWN ANIMATION!
Edited on Sun Mar-05-06 09:29 PM by K8-EEE
So far I love these Oscars!! I especially loved the best animated short winner's plug for HAND DRAWN ANIMATION and those ugly ass Chicken Little characters kind of proved his point (disclaimer: am an animator's wife!)

37. not allowed in US to attend?
This happened earlier but I didn't see it in thread 1 and had to look up the speech to verify.
It sounds like someone wasn't allowed into the country for the awards. Anyone heard anything about this?

From Martin McDonagh's acceptance speech for best short film (live action):

http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/winners/bestliveactionshortfilmcategory.html

Hi. I'd just like to thank everybody who was involved in the film. Especially Brendan Gleeson and Ruaidhri Conroy. And Rory, I'm sorry that you couldn't be here tonight, but I hope next time if they let you into the country. I'd like to say hi to my mom and dad back in Ireland. And, a big hello to everyone involved with Lieutenant Lynchmore in Yatlantic, New York. Thanks.

65. Lol! Whenever I think of Altman I think of a hilltop restaurant in Malibu
I met with an East coast Producer at this restaurant in Malibu that neither of us had been to before (the studio had suggested it). We sat down together, and both sat there quietly for a moment. "This place looks familiar" he said. Then a pause and we both exclaimed at once "THE PLAYER"!! (the restaurant had been featured in the film).

We ate a Chart House instead.

133. That was the safe choice.
Hollywood generally likes its gay characters to be as flamboyantly stereotypical as possible. Ledger's portrayal of Ennis is deeply threatening to those who would like to believe that all gays are easily spotted and very different from "normal people like us." Strathairn (sp?) would also have been a problematic choice, since Hollywood generally rolled over for McCarthy.

So Hoffman was the safe choice, if not the best. Personally, I think his Capote was more an impersonation than a portrayal--he often reminds me of that Jon Lovitz character, Actorman.

144. Constant Gardner was awesome and unique in location shooting ...
... and using locals as extras and supporting cast. For the kind of film it was, that was a truly 'outside the lines' approach - and it came across terrifically.

Of course, it also reduces the production design work - and that part of the budget.

167. You know, that montage of westerns they did....
as a joke made clear just how much homo-eroticism is in the classic western, and now because of Brokeback, the last super-macho image of heterosexual males is ruined for freeper types. Naturally they prefer someone who seems gay like Capote did both in life and in the film.

169. "Capote gay is ok with the freepers"
The flamboyant stereotype is comforting--it says that gays are very different and always easy to spot. There's no way the viewer or the guys in his club could be queer, after all, since they all sashay and mince and prance.

That's what makes Brokeback so subversive and, apparently, threatening even to the Hollywood crowd: it has strong, masculine gay men. That is subversive, and it explains why Brokeback did not do as well as expected.

Brokeback had acheivments in Direction and Screenplay,

HOWEVER.... as far as an overall film - it was too long.

Crash's editing and screenplay ended up trumping Brokeback because of the wider social significance of the story line.

Any other ideas?

Both were good movies, so I don't have a problem with that. But, shit, I was rooting for 'Brokeback' so we could see the fundies' heads explode! :-) Sure, it won a lot of awards, but the fundies might not pay attention to anything less than best picture.

Edited to ad, it's also somewhat unusual for different movies to win best picture and best director.
