How come cults and sci-fi writings get turned into religions?

The moonies were once denounced, rightly so, as a cult. Look at their status today.

Scientology - total sham, and an expensive one too. People fall for it. And its creator, as has been said, is a paltry sci-fi writer.

I think Trek is a religion by now...

So, what else can be turned into religions?

"Doctor Who" deserves to be a religion.

Everybody buys and loves Dial soap, so it should be a religion too. It'd also be useful at confessionals... makes one clean.

We could pray to the Almighty Fork to help us to eat...

Some folks love the Almighty Dollar (until they convert it to the Almighty Euro, because they're almost as patriotic as Benedict arnold...)

9. I've often wondered if it might not be pretty easy...

...to start my own religion. People in 50 years would actually believe in some wild concepts I threw together (no wilder than a lot of the concepts people already believe, after all!), and live their lives by it. Heh. Don't tempt me with ideas like that, HypnoToad. ;)
