Help! Going insane -- TV problems. Anybody Savvy??? |

Edited to add what I have done to try fixing it.
I have a 1990 GE Color TV hooked to a Toshiba TRX-2220 for C Band, a magnavox VCR, and a DVD player. They all work fine. However, I also have a splitter going to the bedroom TV so I can watch satellite in there on channel 3. Channel 3 now does not come in. This all happened when the power was out for a few minutes, so I know it is a reset problem somewhere. But everything I've tried doesn't work. Channel 3 works, but you can't see the satellite on it. We watch the satellite in the living room on the GE TV on channel 90, one of two AV inputs. The DVD is on Channel 91. The VCR is on Channel 3. We can watch all those, but now I can't make channel 3 show up with the satellite. Is it the VCR doing this? What do I need to do? Help? (I'm a chick, if that means anything. Totally clueless.) Heres what I tried: 1. turning on the VCR, while on channel 3, and then hitting the TV/VCR button. I get snow or a blue screen. No Satellite picture. 2. While on channel 3, hitting the buttons on the Toshiba unit (ext, cable) but nothing happens except that I can make the picture go off an on on channel 90. 3. Hitting cable and antenna settings on the TV to make it work. Nothing makes a difference.
It seems to me that I used to be able to make this work by hitting one of these buttons.

I'd disconnect everything from each other, and start with just the satellite and TV. See if you have the same problem. At least then you might be able to isolate the problem components.

3. Sounds like the trouble would be in the Toshiba... |
|
....it's the first link in the chain ...right? Are you saying that channel 3 doesn't work on either tv?

But the Satellite receiver signal goes through channel 90, an AV connection, and to channel 3, so it can be seen by the VCR and recorded. This is also the channel that is "seen" by the TV in the bedroom.

4. Make sure the vcr is tuned to channel 3. |

you know the satellite box is putting out a signal since the tv in the bedroom works on channel 3.
the blue screen on from the vcr shows there is a good connection between the vcr and tv.
There could be a bad cable between the satellite and vcr OR the vcr tuner could have powered up on the wrong channel - that happens to me sometimes. Good luck!

5. Yes, it is tuned to channel 3. |

I checked that out several times. But I also noticed another thing: I can't get the UHF channels on my set now. So th UHF is somehow connected to the problem.
I'm so frustrated, I'm pulling out my hair.

The GE TV works ok but no Sat on ch. 3 nor any UHF channel on the bedroom TV, right? Is the Bedroom TV an RCA witha CTC-series chassis?
I'll talk to you later.
I have 20 year's experience with the one-eyed goggle box.

Now it works on channel 3 and you can see the satellite in the bedroom and I did nothing different. When I went to bed last night it was all f'd up. This morning, ditto. Tonight, it works BUT you still can't get the UHF on the set in the living room. The UHf comes in fine on the TV in the bedroom, which is really weird because the same antenna serves both sets.
The set in the bedroom is a magnavox. Great set. Bought it in 1996. The GE was purchased at Sam's (don't shoot me) in 1990. I have no idea about the CTC-series chassis. It is a 27-inch TV with stereo.
However, the GE set is very, very strange. About six months ago the picture died. I mean, it just left. No sound, no nothing. A straight line across the screen. We figured it was dead and turned it off and began making plans for burial. Two days later (I think we were too busy to watch TV for a few days) Larry forgot and turned it on and it worked. But now the picture is very dark and contrasty and I have to turn the bright up really high and the contrast with it in order to see well. Especially the West Wing. The West Wing is really dark. I know I'm rambling, but I think this set is haunted (not really, but it is very, very unusual.)
