I hear it was good. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the only interactive fiction I played, and I didn't finish that.

41. Very real
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_your_base_are_belong_to_us

"The text is taken from the opening found in the English version of the Japanese video game Zero Wing, the translation of which was terrible to the point of hilarity."

No kidding. The whole introductory line was "All your base are belong to us. You have no chance to survive make your time!"

16. Anybody remember "Amnesia"? (no pun intended)
A text adventure by science-fiction author Thomas Disch released in the mid-80s; I picked it up dirt cheap around 7-8 years ago when a local computer store was selling out its leftover Apple and Commodore stuff. Anyway:

"It feels great to be a single faceless, nameless atom among the million others churning about in
the grid of Manhattan's streets. It feels safe".

And damn if that game isn't tough.

But damn if the parts of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy wasn't as funny as the non-interactive version!

Jaheira, from the same game.

Viconia and Sarevok have some fabulous quotes in BG II - they get into a discussion on pleasure slaves and Sarevok admits that she scares him. He also smart-asses at Imoen a couple times.

37. I like both, but actually prefer II.
The character development is better. (And there are a brazillion hacks to the modules that allow for all sorts of interesting stuff.) Also, since I'm on a Mac, BG II is more stable because it runs natively in OSX. BG was made for OS 9, and is pretty flaky.
