Tell me again why there's a seperate category for best actor and actress?
The "best actor" roles are usually challenging roles with a great deal of gravitas and often go to older men, while most of the "best actress" roles are written for young, hot cupcakes.

Is this totally sexist, or what???

2. You are not wrong
And it kills me that dinosaurs like Sean Connery, et al, are still cast in "romantic" roles with women young enough to be their grand daughters.

48. I hate to point this out, but...
Dinosaurs like Connery are still cast in those roles because pretty much every woman I know STILL thinks he's hot. Don't blame THEM for that. Blame your peers.

49. but there are
plenty of older women, women in their 40s and 50s (and maybe even 60s) that are plenty attractive enough to play opposite them.

I'm much more interested in an older man if I know he likes women his own age.

50. It's probably because you're not the demographic they're targeting.
They'd rather get the 20-30 something demographic that's statistically more likely to go to the movies. They want younger women believing they can score Sean Connery.

12. I'm in one of those weird melancholy moods
Thanks to my raging hormones (that time of the month and all). I can't stop ruminating on how horrible humans are to each other--war, genocide, hate crimes, etc. And how we have it in our power to end much of the hunger, homelessness, ignorance and poverty of the world but instead waste our resources on war and stupid/frivolous things.

It will pass though.

But I also get pretty bitter about unrealistic expectations leveled upon women all the time. I like to see those rules changing. I just wish that it didn't go hand in hand with advancements in plastic surgery, because that defeats the whole purpose.

Was that a circuitous rant? ;)

23. That's not romance.
That's just sex.

But who gets the shit end of that situation? If they made that movie with a 22 year old actress, would it suck more for women out of their 20s, because they are supposed to be "over the hill."

Or would it suck more to be an old guy who is led to believe that he can realistically bed a 22 year old? }(

I don't know.

17. Y'gotta remember
things were different when the Academy Awards were introduced in 1927. Not that they didn't have young, hot cupcakes (Mary Pickford won the second Best Actress award for "Coquette"), but just look at some of the early winners: Helen Hayes, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Greer Garson...

We were a different kind of society then.

24. Personally, I would like to see best actress/actor in a COMEDY..
and best picture comedy.. Those 5 awards could replace the "techincal-yawners" that send people all over the world reaching for the mute buttons and the TIVO controls..

It's not surprising to me that the boring 3 hour+ behemoth continues to lose "advertiser-eyes".. It's also the perfect example of hubris when the AA & Tony awards SHOW always gets nominated for an emmy.. shame on them..

Great comedy is much harder to do than mediocre drama, IMHO.

It's the only thing the Emmys have gotten right over the Oscars.

I've even wondered why we need a word "actress." Does the word "actor" mean "man who acts?" There doesn't seem to be anything in the word that indicates gender.

I went to Tehama county and had a bird from your neck of the woods: Eurasian Wigeon!

I also had Tundra Swan, Wood Duck, and many Mountain Bluebirds!

Afterward I went to the hardware store and got some potting soil with which to fill the planter box! I need to put on 5 more boards and fill it and it'll be good to go! It's at the stage now where I can see how it will be!

I'll send you a picture when it's done! :bounce:

46. Totally sexist, indeed. Not to mention it would make the Oscars
infinitely more interesting and SHORTER.

Imagine 5 of the best actors (male and female) competing against each other, instead of 2 best actresses and 3 also rans. Imagine 3 standout performances to choose from instead of one.

51. They should divide the film roles, not the actors
It should be best performance in a drama and best performance in a comedy/musical. These are very different skill sets and actors who dominate a comedy/musical should not be "regulated" to the golden globes. The whole sexist crapfest that is the oscars pisses me off each year. I usually watch the highlights, but never the show. I do try to watch the films that get a lot of discussion for awards, but it takes me until the end of the year to catch up.
