DU Poets: Post your best 'break up' poem.
Here's mine:

A Better Heaven

Alone
With the memory of you
Is a better Heaven
Than a night with another
And the memory of you

Let's hear yours!

So f**k you

4. Here's mine
Talking Divorce

The subject of divorce
hums like a wire
in the air that surrounds us.
We approach it like a bomb,
or a two handled china cup
that hovers on the edge of a table.
Over the years,
we shook the table;
we yelled, threw things,
had angry trembling silences
that danced the cup toward the plunge.
I bump into the subject.
The cup sways on the edge;
the bomb's fuse is exposed.
it does not explode.
We almost smile in relief.
But we both know the broken cup
and the bomb, defused,
is our reward.
I go back to the home
of my new lover.
In one hand I display the
white porcelain piece
shaped like a letter
of the alphabet.
In the other, the fuse,
a lethal spark plug.
I told her,
she got all the cup,
except the 'C',
and I got the part of the bomb
that ticks.

Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 10:40 AM by CarolinaPeridot
I can't lie to you anymore
I am gone
I am a leaving on my way out the door
I've realized that our love is not meant to be
I've realized that I'm in love with only me
I can't stand seeing you here
I can't stand living in the fear
of you messing of my life again
This is a game that neither of us can win

I don't know if I love you
I don't know if I hate you
But all I know is that I'm moving on
I've never felt so strong in all my life
I'm doing thats so right
So , long I'm putting you out of my life ...

And btw you make me really sick ... :: makes hurling sound ::

"Divorce Song" for the Breaker-upper:

And when I asked for a separate room
It was late at night, and we'd been driving since noon
But if I'd known how that would sound to you
I would have stayed in your bed for the rest of my life
Just to prove I was right
That it's harder to be friends than lovers
And you shouldn't try to mix the two
'Cause if you do it and you're still unhappy
Then you know that the problem is you
And it's true that I stole your lighter
And it's also true that I lost the map
But when you said that I wasn't worth talking to
I had to take your word on that
But if you'd known how that would sound to me
You would have taken it back
And boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Boxed it up and buried it in the ground
Burned it up and thrown it away
You put in my hands a loaded gun
And then told me not to fire it
When you did the things you said were up to me
And then accused me of trying to fuck it up
But you've never been a waste of my time
It's never been a drag
So take a deep breath and count back from ten
And maybe you'll be alright
And the license said you had to stick around until I was dead
But if you're tired of looking at my face, I guess I already am
But you've never been a waste of my time
It's never been a drag
So take a deep breath and count back from ten
And maybe you'll be alright.

or the ever popular "johnny sunshine" for the breakup-ee:

You took the car, it was my favorite one
A little white Dart, and drove it to Idaho
You took the horse, it was a thoroughbred
Saddled it up out on the interstate

You killed the cat, burned it in antifreeze
Dumped in the trunk with the rest of the cattlefeed
You took the house, you went and changed the locks
Now I am stuck living out of a box

I think I've been taken
For everything I own
I've been hurt so badly
I'm alone, baby, I'm alone

You left me nothing
You left me nothing
Johnny Sunshine

You left me nothing
You left me nothing
Johnny Sunshine

You left me nothing...
You

10. Heres my latest and it has its own thread now
Primary Blues
I got the primary blues
Aint been a single primary yet
But people think its all but over
It aint over till its over

Loads of infighting
How we gonna unite in the end
Bush can kiss my ass
I got the primary blues

Your guy is ugly
My guy is too left
Their guy is just stupid
I got the primary blues

Thinkin of the future
A world without Bush aint it great
Viva la liberation
I got the primary blues

Come November day when we vote Bush out
Behind a candiate whos name we know not
Leading the charge against a bastard
I dream of victory

Then the news comes
Seems like Bush got his ass beat
That bastard is out
So the primary blues are gone and Bush is

I dunno. Feels a little weird to me, but okay. Dunno if this is my best one, but it's one, anyway.

may i hurt you

one last time? (for love,

for giving as good as you)

the first kiss and the last

are the same tender newness

each is only once stolen

or given. hold me and do not cry

watch the sun glisten far away.

pretend it hurts your eyes.

Man, I was on DU for a year and a half before the sex threads popped up. Never crossed my mind. Now that they're gone, it's like we're faking it somehow.

Oh well. Still love DU. Just knowing there are all those sexy, dedicated and poetic liberals out there makes me able to go on.

I have been a DU member since very early on but I've wandered off and come back to the board several times. I came back this last time in a frisky place in my life and the sex threads just kinda followed. I'll cop to being an instigator - but I'm not the only one. *coughshortbuscough*

to reply to that. I like GOPisEvil. He's a great guy. But we are just not each other's type. Don't have that particular kind of chemistry. And that's fine. He's a great guy to have as a buddy and it's fun to tease him about his love life and let him tease me about mine.

18. It's a little long, and isn't about an actual breakup, but ...
Here goes:

THE OLD COAT

I saw her the other day,
She didn’t know I was there,
She came out from work,
Wearing that same old coat.
I always hated that coat.

I told her many times —
It was like a criticism of me and my ability to provide.
But she insisted on wearing the beat-up old thing,
Told me it was functional.
It was warm.
It ‘served the purpose.’

The Christmas I tried to replace it,
She said she felt criticized; put on the spot.
She never wore the new coat.
It’s still in my closet to this day.
The buttery black leather reminds me,
I miscalculated badly. Often.

I remember her face, one summer afternoon,
Turned up to the window,
The sun on her forehead; her cheeks.
Her mouth.
I loved her mouth, among other things.
The expression on her face when the cardinals perched,
In the tree outside.
She had nothing in her hands but a cup of coffee.
It was like it was money.
I don’t understand why she doesn’t want for anything,
Even though she doesn’t have anything.
And why she won’t come back.
We were together for years.
I worked so hard, put in such long hours,
Went away so many times.
She said she never wanted it.
How can you live your whole life like you were twenty-two?
How can you never want anything more material,
Ever?

How can you not want?
Isn’t that giving up?
Not wanting anything else.
Isn’t that clinical depression?
Isn’t that sick?

She’s moving through life,
Moving fast in her old coat,
Her old car, listening to her old music.
Newness makes its mark.

I appreciate the feel of something nobody else has ever touched.
I’ll never understand how she keeps moving,
Uncomplaining, making just enough,
Having just enough, feeling just enough.

I have to have the rush of the new,
The adrenaline of challenge.
It’s my life.
I don’t understand her.

19. Valentine's day sonnet
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 12:01 PM by chaska
Lines were ne're so simple
As when together we were much in love
Could sit for hours and contemplate your dimples
And count the stars in your eyes my dove
But now you've flown and verses aren't forthcoming
Pen and paper are as chisel and stone
And too my heart like gristle is becoming
'Hind ramparts bricked of muscle and bone
The years crawl by, be it blessing or a curse,
I still feel the sting on my flank
Of the branded words "for better, for worse"
But yours is the wound that grows rank
When death comes calling with the sounding of the knell
May quick be your judge so you may long rot in Hell

I wrote this as an assignment in college. It was intended to be funny actually. I wrote it about a friend and his adulterous ex-wife (the 'rank wound' is a synonym for..., well let's just call it a metaphor for adultery).

I know
You had to go
You had to flee
My negativity
And yet
I would have bet:
My final dollar
(my sorry neck)
That there were treasures
We'd try to salvage from the wreck.
Instead we let it lie
Till all love died.
So long, farewell
Like death, goodbye

34. A Silence
Among its petals the rose
still holds
a few tears of the morning rain that
broke it from its stem.
In each
shines a speck of
red light, darker even
than the rose.

Phoenix-tailed
slateblue martins pursue
one another, spaced out
in hopeless hope, circling
the porous clay vase, dark from
the water in it.

Silence
surrounds the facts. A language
still unspoken.

35. Lowdon Wainwright the Third had the best song
Oh when I die
And it won't be long
Hey you're gonna be sorry
That you treated me wrong

Hey you're gonna be sorry
that you treated me bad
If there's an afterlife
I'll gloat and I'll be glad

Might be a plane crash
Or some sort of OD
hey there's gonna be a photograph
With my obituary
You're gonna see it and you'll cry
You're gonna wanna wear black
Hey I'll be dead but you can bet you're life I'm gonna get you back

I'm tired of being left up on your shelf
Might not wait around you know
I might kill myself
Not only will you miss me
But you'll feel guilty too
Oh I'll be dead but it will be too late
The joke will be on you

So you better take a warning
Start treating me good
Start doing the things
That I think you should
You better not pout
And you better not cry
The grim reaper's coming to town and I just might die

38. mutual break up poem
Grey Tones

Parting
It seems to me a grey tone.
Somber
Like a darkness over, between us.
Voices
Once joy filled, now silent, why?
Defenses
Broken again and again, blood time.
Cuts
Run far too deep to ignore.
So
A turn, a walk away
Yes
Now it seems to me,
Parting
It feels like a dark grey tone.
somber
cutting
voices
gone.....
