Dennis Miller Career Watch: Bonnie Hunt Enlists Dennis Miller & Joe Manteg
Bonnie Hunt Enlists Dennis Miller & Joe Mantegna

She's cute, she's funny and she's got a few new costars. Reuters says that Dennis Miller and Joe Mantegna have agreed to join Bonnie Hunt in a new sitcom for ABC.

I understand Hunt and Mantegna, but can Miller follow a script? He didn’t exactly steal any scenes in "Joe Dirt." Lauren Tom ("Futurama") has also been cast for the untitled comedy.

1. Miller almost never acted on SNL...
...and with good reason. You could tell his heart wasn't in it. He was apparently hired to do what he did best, and only occasionally filled holes in sketches.

3. It will depend on the material.
I like Bonnie Hunt and Joe Mantegna (the latter has done some interesting work, including for David Mamet), and the fact that Miller is in the program wouldn't stop me from at least tuning in to see if it's any good. In fact, Miller might contrast well with the other cast members.

I think Miller's embrace of Bush is foolhardy at best, but that doesn't mean he has't done some good comedy over the years.

What will make or break this is the writing, the commitment of the network, the ability to land an audience, and the time slot.

4. What in the hell can Miller do on a sitcom?
Maybe he'll pop out of a garbage can and make snide remarks like Oscar the Grouch.

5. There's two words that don't go together
"Dennis Miller" and "career". He was passable as the news guy on SNL, but that's about it. He's a one-trick pony. Another smart-ass middle-class white guy. Just what the world needs.

6. Off topic but...
... why do networks keep giving Bonnie Hunt shows. She's been the star of two or three that I can think of and none of them were very successful.

Am I missing something?
