The making of itty-bitty consumers |
|
No, I'm not talking about advertisements (though they are indeed a huge impetus for wee ones clamoring for stuff and more stuff).
I'm talking about the variety of toys that smack of commercialism.
I went shopping for a birthday present for my niece the other night. While browsing the toddler toys (she's going to be two) I came across several items that were quite obviously designed to train the tiny tots of America to become little consumers well before they can utlize paper or plastic.
A "scanner" fashioned after the laser scanners used by cashiers, complete with a supply of price-tags.
A "mall play set" containing a variety of stores, shoppers and little wares for sale.
A "Barbie" type doll with her own shopping bag and credit-card.
:wtf:

1. When I was a kid there was stuff like that... |
|
and, yeah, lots of ads on Saturday morning to push us to bug our parents to buy stuff-- many of them part of the shows. Howdy Doody, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Andy's Gang... everyone had a sponsor and something to sell us.
Could be why we are the way we are now.
