Anyone else Do Volunteer Work?
Just curious. What kinds of things do you do?

1. Occasionally do pet transports.
I help transport rescue dogs that are going to foster or forever homes in other states. I haven't done it for a while because of the price of gas.

5. I volunteer for selfish reasons.
I confess that I volunteer for selfish reasons - it energizes me.

I'm on the board of directors of an organization for people with disabilities, an urban youth-serving arts organization, a civic organization and a board committee of a private school. I also serve on a number of fundraising and event committees for women's organizations and am the editor of a quarterly newsletter for a cultural heritage society.

And in my paid life, I work for a non-profit organization and consult for another non-profit.

9. I am a Hospice Volunteer Visitor.
I spend time with people who are on the edge of life and provide practical, as well as emotional, support to their families, too. It is a great blessing to me, personally, to be of service in this way.

11. Back when I was a volunteer geek
before my health/disability issues took over I used to do a ton of different things.

soup kitchens, working with kids in programs for the homeless, Central Park conservancy (gardening, painting, etc.), working with kids at public holiday events, giving out food to the homeless out on the street, fund raising for several medical charities, volunteer training.

I spent one morning or afternoon a week for years as a pro-choice escort outside a doctor's office. Our job was either to get women safely past the anti-choice yahoos (team 1), or go argue with the yahoos to keep them busy and distracted (team 2). I was good at team 2. :7

These days I limit myself to babysitting.
