1. I can't believe he didn't put Rubber Soul in the top 15, that's their best

2. Well, not all of them
But enough to make it a very interesting place to spend some time.

I'm putting together a project that has to do with the chronological order of ALL rock releases from 1964-1973/4, and this will be a huge help.

Thanks for finding it. :yourock:

8. You've got a BIG project ahead of you.
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 06:01 PM by RandomKoolzip
Just cataloguing the 30,000 or so local garage bands that popped up after the Beatles hit will be a ten/fifteen-year project alone.

Here's a couple of places to start:

http://www.lysergia.com/AcidArchives/index.htm

http://www.dionysusrecords.com/bacchus/psych.html

And that's just the tip of the iceberg...it's nowhere near comprehensive...

When you get to the Mystic Tyde or Tongue and Groove, lemme know. Also of interest is Ron Moore's book, "Underground Sounds." Very rare, but an attmpt at thouroughness.

15. Thanks RZ!
Yes indeed I do. Actually, the magnitude isn't quite as bad as I made it out to be. The project encompasses the artists who released commercially available albums during that time period, so I should be able to knock it off in, oh, 5 to 10 years. :)

It all started when I was doing research with a lot of Joel Whitburn's books, and realized that he had never even attempted a comprehensive cataloging of this time period, save of course for what hit the Billboard album charts during said period. Since many artists released albums that I VIVIDLY remember and did not hit the charts with them the project started.

And look, I'm already up to Area Code 615, which as you know released both "Area Code 615" and "A Trip in The Country", with only the former charting at #191 in 1969. :) :)

3. This guy has ZERO cred in my book
he ranked "Quadrophenia" above "Who's Next". Everybody knows "Who's Next" is the better album.

6. He also ranked every Beach Boys greatest hits collection above Pet Sounds
I mean come on, Pet Sounds is almost universally known as Paul McCartney's favorite album.

10. I actually did find an album review on another page of his.
He has another page of bands where he says some of them are "unrated".

http://starling.rinet.ru/music/index.htm

Here's the Oasis page.

http://starling.rinet.ru/music/oasis.htm

Here, he reveals himself to be a Beatlist propagandist by not giving the album five stars.

Ok, mind you his ratings of LZ was pretty bad but I think he played to heavily into favorites with poorer ratings on such classic albums like David Bowie's Low (should have been in one of the top 2 groups), Blind Faith and low ratings for Pink Floyd (where the hell was 'The Wall'?), Moody Blues and Yes.

The guy can kiss my ass

Jesus...it's all hippie bullshit! The standard hippie holy triumvirate (Beatles, Stones, Dylan....yawn) and a few token albums by a few white people released after 1985?! That's about .001% of everything that's happened since 1964. Someone tell this putz about punk rock (and James Brown)

9. It's just an opinion
Good reading, though. I too think the Beatles are up at the top. Bruce Springsteen's rated too low IMO. So is Simon And Garfunkel - bland strumming?? No way. The Joshua Tree is too low. Abba's Waterloo WAY too low. I would probably disagree on The Soft Bulletin being so high. And other assorted complaints.

23. It should be obvious that this is by no means comprehensive
It's just some guy with time on his hands. He obviously doesn't listen to other types of music, hence they don't factor in to the equation. Look, he's helping me do some of my legwork by giving release dates for albums, so it makes my task easier. For that, I give him a thumbs up. Other than that, it really doesn't mean much. Remember: there are 400 billion Chinese who couldn't give a shit.

Perhaps there is a preponderance of "old-fogey" rock because, oh, just for the sake of discussion, let's just say that any type of creativity in the rock idiom died around 1973 or so and everything since is merely a lame rehash of what's gone before?

Just for the sake of discussion, of course. :) :)

Do you think he has lots of Beatles, Dylan, Who and Stones albums? It's hardly a cross section. Branch out. And for fuck's sake, listen to somebody who isn't whitebread and popular.

if you're going to do a reference of all music, you've got to get a little more diverse.

24. That's exactly what I meant.
WHile I'm no fan of Dylan, and I rarely listen to much Beatles, I understand their appeal and I recognize their talent. But to say that every damned live Beatles album is a 15, without including some other genres of music, is a crock.
