3. Saw a preview for it a couple weeks ago |

Looks amazing, at least in terms of scope and cinematography.
Can't vouch for anything involving acting and/or storyline, though, since the preview was all visuals. Stunning visuals. The scene with the thousand ships was VERY cool.

I am an eager student of Greek mythology, and the Iliad poem. I will very likely have to see it, and hope it kicks the awful TV version from a few years ago in the tush.

7. You realize they're taking the Gods (and Goddesses) out? |
|
It's not Homer's telling; it's been re-done to remove the Olympian dimension. Interesting approach, especially given that nearly all "Clash of the Titans" style movies tend to completely fall apart once you cut to Zeus etc.
In this version, the seige of Troy and the marriages etc. are all political. There is no "competition between the godesses" as in Homer. Presumably the "Achilles heel" element is gone too,
Homer doesn't cover the Trojan Horse (except in an anecdote in The Illiad) so this version goes beyond the Homeric narrative.
Brad Pitt, playing Achilles, messed up his Achilles tendon while filming.

9. Leaving out the Gods is understandable.... |
|
It might be too reminiscent of "Xena, Warrior Princess". I liked that show (& even some "Hercules" episodes) but I think they're going for a different tone in this movie.
Also possibly mentioned--as it was by the Classical Greeks--the "other" reason for the war. Troy was a rich city in a strategically significant location--ripe for plunder. Using a high-sounding excuse for a greedy invasion was probably an old trick even back then.....
Barring truly hideous reviews, I'll check this one out.

10. I have mixed feelings about that... |
|
Do you know if they're cutting out ALL Homeric elements? To me, fewer scenes in any work of literature present as powerful an anti-war statement as that of Homer's mother baring and grasping her breast (from which she suckled her son), shrieking in mourning as her son's broken body is dragged around the battlefield beneath her.
An amazing, emotional scene.

I was planning on seeing it anyway, despite the lack of mythos.
Brad Pitt, playing Achilles, messed up his Achilles tendon while filming.
Now that... is comedy!

8. I notice it has two LOTR grads: |
|
Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean.
Brad Pitt doesn't hurt the line-up, either. :)

That opening with the ships is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a preview, so barring horrid reviews, I too will be attending the film.
