5. I'm right there with ya.
"I'm a bookkeeper's son
I don't want to shoot no one
Well I crossed my old man back in Oregon
Don't take me alive
Got a case of dynamite
I could hold out here all night
Yes I crossed my old man back in Oregon
Don't take me alive"

I LOVE the Dan and I'm not ashamed!

10. Any world that I'm welcome to
is better than the one I come from.

But then, I'm way deep into nothing special, riding the crest of a wave breaking just west of Hollywood.

(And somebody once made the claim to me that he was Kid Charlemagne.)

was actually the soundman for some other group. maybe the Dead or Led Zep, can't remember now. he "dabbled" in chemical preparations on the side. the "diamond with the pearl" he mixed might be extacy.

it's noted in the liner notes on 1 of the newest albums, i think. there's a good Dan forum at: www.steelydan.com

12. Are you sure?
I know the character is somewhat based on Augustus Stanley Owsley III, who was credited with brewing the best LSD around during the Summer of Love (and yes, he helped build and run the Grateful Dead's sound system back in the day). But the last couple verses are nothing like Owsley's own history.

Actually I don't think anything is known of Owsley's own history after he and the Dead parted ways. He was wealthy enough to cover his tracks pretty well.

I think Becker & Fagen just saw an interesting hook for a song. Most of their sympathetic characters are outcasts, massive violators of social norms.

Are you with me, Doctor Wu? :hi:

13. Owsley may be the guy
at any rate, it was a characterization based upon, not really meant to be autobiagraphical.

you sure know your "rock outlaw" history!
