GM celebrates Hummer's state-of-the-art 1950s engine technology with some
Fabian, Pat Boone, Frankie Avalon, and Dion and the Belmonts are just some of today's top performers to be featured in GM's new campaign for the Hummer H2.

"To showcase the Hummer's cutting-edge really-big engine technology, and explain how it fits into the lifestyle of the forward-thinking 50s American, we're playing off the popularity of some of today's hottest musical acts," said GM vice-president of marketing Jim Clenndennen.

"We want people to see that the Hummer H2 is the perfect vehicle, whether you're a teenager heading down to the soda shoppe, a father taking the family on one of those leisurely Sunday drives, or a mom shopping in the downtown business district," continued Clenndennen. "Just like today's music," he continued, "you can take the Hummer wherever you go."

Although the Hummer gets only around 10 miles to the gallon, compared to 25 in the original Model T, General Motors insists that it has not fallen behind on the technology curve. The new Hummer sports advanced tailfin designs, a dent-resistant bumper and 7-inch halogen head lamps. Nevertheless, with gas prices edging up towards 35 cents a gallon, consumers may not be as willing to sacrifice fuel economy.

Even so, senior designer Forrest McAuliffe remarked, "I think the Hummer demonstrates that GM is a long, long way from the days of the Model T. Sputnik's got nothing on this baby!"

How Americans use their Hummer H2
Delivering Girl Scout cookies: 16%
Becoming Exxon's customer of the month: 21%
Intimidating fellow man: 46.5%
Hauling "Starving Artists" painting purchases: 4%
Overcoming fear of heights: 12%
Playing hide and seek: 9%
Off-roading: 0.5%

2. Why is gas still so cheap in the US?
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 07:59 PM by Kellanved
European prices (3.8€ for a Gallon, so above $4) would make those SUVs vanish in no time. (or at least somewhat rarer)+

Edit: LOL BTW

3. High taxes. The price of petroleum is about the same everywhere
Europe keeps the taxes high to encourage conservation. Interestingly, they vary the taxes so that the tax drops when the petroleum price rises so that consumers are not hurt, especially those consumers of limited means.

5. To keep us dependent on crude oil
So that Cheney's gang gets rich. Simple as that. If Americans started behaving responsibly, those guys would be out of work.

7. America is bereft of courageous leaders
When President Jimmy Carter addressed the nation on television wearing a sweater and told people that they should conserve energy, he was ridiculed. It smacks of conspiracy to me. There are some people making ungodly fortunes selling petroleum and other centralized forms of energy, and they wish to make their fortunes now. Damn the future when we run out of petroleum.
