How many DU women straighten their hair? (Or guys, too.)

With those scary hair iron thingys?

:scared:

I just know I would burn myself, make my hair fall out, or burn down the building with one of those things.

3. I don't know.
I don't think I really need it.

I was just watching a friend of mine use it a couple days ago and couldn't help but think of all the bad things that would come of me owning one. :D

8. Well, you adjust the heat
according to your hair type. Run it over a piece of hair - near roots to end. Unless you keep it in one place too long, the hair will be okay. I use one that shuts itself off in case I forget.

22. Suggestion
There are ceramic flat irons that are smaller (I like 1") than the one you pictured. If it's a frizz day, use a product with dimethicone and cyclomethicone - Biosilk, Silk Therapy is a light weight one. There are a ton of products out there. As for using an iron, if your hair is curly or frizzy, it will only stay straight on a fairly dry day - iron or no iron.

28. Mine too. When I think of all the time I have spent trying to get
a little curl in my hair knowing that a little wind, a little humidity or a couple of passes with a comb will erase any efforts I have taken.

5. I have only used a flatiron on unruly parts of my hair
My hair is naturally wavy with a tendency to be frizzy, so I use it in one or two spots to tame things down. My hair is not naturally straight and looks terrible completely straight. I don't use a flatiron on a regular basis---only when it is ridiculously frizzy, and only on the parts that really need it.

11. Yes I occasionally use one
Usually when I have more time to get ready. During the week before work-forget it. My hair has a slight wave to it, so usually I just wash, use some scrunching gel and run.
I have used it on days when it has rained and in little more then a few hours my hair started to wave up again! Most of the time I just don't have the time or patience.

And yes they get very hot so be careful.

I have to use a curling iron just to add some texture, not curl, otherwise my hair lays flatter than a pancake.

Most people don't realize that their hair is not strong enough to put up with the constant and intense heat of those things. Every once in a while I will roll my daughter's hair on soup cans to straighten it out, but those "things" aren't allowed in my house. :)

She has very long, thick, naturally wavy hair. It hasn't seemed to harm her hair. Lately though, I've managed to convince her that it's darned gorgeous the way it is, so she throws a little gel in when it's wet, tossles it, and it looks gorgeous.

Mine? Strait as a board. (I remember attempting to get perms back in the 80's and it didn't even work.)

Most of them are set up so you'd have to be trying to burn yourself, and you'd have to hold your hair in it for a couple of minutes for it to burn through. They're safe.

33. Some days I do, some days I don't.
One thing that is very important to know about flat irons is that they are not all alike. Don't use a metal one, it will burn and ruin your hair(and don't work that well either). Use one that is ceramic or tourmaline.

They sell iron spray that protects the hair.

If there is any kind of edge between the hot plate and your scalp, you most likely will not burn yourself.

Good luck.

34. Not anymore
That was my life's mission when I was in my early teens..to have straight hair. I used to have one similar to that but it used steam, which I would think is a bit more gentle.

I also had my hair straighted professionally twice..hair went back to normal the first time I washed it. Eventually I gave up, figured out the curls and now embrace them!

56. I do

I have naturally curly hair that I can wear straight or curly.
It's all about technique.
First have freshly washed hair, and make sure it's completely dry.
Then what I do is, I section my hair out. The top and middle (separately) go into a clip, and I leave the very bottom loose.
Then I start straightening with the bottom and go up.
Also you need a good straightener, not a cheaper Conair one (I have a Wigo).

I use Matrix Sleek.Look shampoo & conditioner. They also have some serum you can put in your hair before you blow dry, but I don't use it. I have also used their stuff you spray in your hair afterwards and I'll use that on really humid days to keep the frizzies at bay. In general I don't get much frizz when I just use the shampoo and conditioner.

I've used a flat iron twice a week (sometimes three times) and a blowdryer as much and I have perfectly healthy hair.

edited to add: I also sometimes just blowdry with a big round brush and I do leave it curly occassionally. I just find that it's more work when it's curly, adding gel and all that. It's easier to just brush it when it's straight.

I've seen many a dead head of hair from cheap irons. Hair split almost all the way to the root.
