I can always count on one thing in any music thread:
someone will say something that pisses me off, and someone will despise a band I love, or love a band I despise.

Ain't diversity a great thing? But y'all have some weird-ass taste in music. :P

1. As John Kerry might say...
never mind I can't bring myself to say what John Kerry would say.

;)

2. The democratic party is a big tent.
I mean, who in FR would like some of the obscure shit some of us like? I mean, you give 'em a poll on this shit over there, and I'm sur they'd all say, "uh, I like Zeppelin, Floyd, and Rush. But mostly I hate musicians for being the useless liberal arts grad parasites they are."

Diversity IS a wonderful thing.

4. Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and the Pixies, are a few of my faves...
I like almost any thing though. Everyone from the Dixie Chicks, to Motzart, to Blondie, to Buddy Holly, to Rage Against the Machine, to Bab Marley, to the Beatles, to the Talking Heads, to the Pretenders, to Beck, to Garbage, to Eminem, to Weird Al and They Might Be Giants. We have all the bases covered in this house. Someday we plan to hand over one of the best music collections ever to our teenage sons.

5. You'd have to start with genres
it'd be a long list...I like a lot of bands, and a lot of different types of music. I pretty much eschew any kind of Nashville "country" music, detest most mainstream pop, and am not much of a rap/hip-hop fan. But in almost every genre - even those three! - there can be found a band I like.

What I listen to on a daily basis:
Classical (particularly Mozart and Beethoven and Vivaldi)
Blues-rock (SRV still rules from beyond)
Celtic music
Good old-fashioned rock and roll (which doesn't have to be "classic" rock the way FM plays it now, with nothing new - more the way it's played on XM Satellite Radio's Deep Tracks channel)
Motown soul

I worship anything Peter Gabriel's ever recorded, and own pretty much everything REM's ever released, if that pins things down any. The Allman Brothers can do no wrong.

Does that answer your question? ;-)
