12. Poco was an incredibly sweet black shorthair who was admittedly |
|
not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Very funny, very clumsy, almost like a dog in cat's clothing. In her day, she weighed in at 22 lbs, was struggling at 10 lbs. this past week.
She gave me so much joy every day she was here, as I'm sure all the pet lovers out there can appreciate.
When we take a pet home, we know that if we're lucky, we'll outlive him or her. It sure doesn't make this day any easier, though.

The good news is that I also have a 16 year old cat, who I wouldn't feel right about disrupting with a little whippersnapper at her age. It'll just have to be me and Chelsea for awhile. But rest assured, I will always have pets. And they will be loved.

Actually, my plan for the next shift is to adopt a shelter dog, get him acclimated, then get two litter-mate kittens.

It's something that all of us animal chaperons must face...
I helped raise three kitties (Momma and two of her offspring). When my roommate moved to NC, she brought all three with her. Momma ("Babette") passed first, then Phoenix (he was truly a daddy's boy, I still miss that little chump...). Phoebe is still with us, but I haven't seen her in about 5 years. I now have two of my own kitty sisters (litter-mates), Miranda and Minerva, who will be with me until it's their time to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I applaud your courage to do the right thing, even when it feels so wrong. Bless you and your lost one...

61. I've been through this twice before with the family dogs |
|
but this was the first time the pet was mine only. Also, I wasn't living under the same roof with the family dogs at the time of their passing, so there weren't so many daily reminders.
It was tough to be the only one making the decision, but nobody ever said it was going to be easy, right?
Enjoy your little companion every day!

60. I feel for you, Rad. Poco had been in the emergency hospital since Monday |
|
with acute kidney failure. They were keeping her alive with IV fluids. It was hell because the night before, I had gone up and spent 2 hours with her, and she was an absolute mess. I knew what I had to do. Then, when I went up there yesterday to euthanize her, she looked much better. I made the doctor wait for about an hour, because I just wasn't so positive anymore. He told me that she had been going back and forth all week, but only because of the fluids.
Bottom line, I was never taking her home and there was no chance for normalcy. I have to say that I actually felt better after it was done. I had been crying all week, making an absolute fool of myself at work, but after it was done, I wasn't crying. I knew I had done the right thing. Don't get me wrong, I've certainly done my share since the ride home. But I know it was right.
Lots of friends have since told me stories that on the last day, their pets and even human family members have looked like their old selves. I think it's their way of giving you one last glimpse to hold in your heart for the long haul.
One good friend made me feel better by saying that for every moment of joy that Poco gave to me over the years, she felt the same joy from me. That helps...
It is definitely better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. So, hang in there and be strong. Your memories will keep you.

It is painful to lose our friends. I have a 19 year old cat, Meg, and always on my mind is that time is moving us towards that final day. It never is easy even when they are old and you know each day takes away and does not give back.
I have found that bringing a new friend into the house eases the grief, at least on the surface. With a new pet comes new responsibilty and the joy of seeing a new and unique personality become part of your life.
