I had a shock tonight
I was pleased to learn that my 23-year-old cousin became a born again southern baptist.I find out today that he believes the end is near and the second coming of christ is imminent, now I am creeped about the whole thing!

I called a friend of mine to get some comfort from this whole idea and she tells me that the world IS coming to and end and that I KNOW it......Where did all these doomsayers come from all of a sudden? Why do they think like this? 9-11?

1. Didn't you hear Cheech's prophecy from "Up in smoke"?
"The world's coming to an end, I don't even care.
As long as I can have my limo and my orange hair."--Cheech

2. Televangelism
Edited on Tue May-02-06 09:16 PM by Ariana Celeste
I think that's the biggest reason so many people think that. I could be wrong, maybe it's preached in churches too? I wouldn't know, haven't been to a church in a few years.

I have a buddy, who whenever he starts getting a little too drunk, starts talking about how he knows he will never go to Heaven but oh Lord he will someday rise from the dead and eat the flesh of the living... we nod and smile and change the subject.

On edit: Anytime I have been in church I never heard sermons about the End Times... only about how fill-in-the-blank were sinners and going to Hell, so don't be a fill-in-the-blank.

9. You know, I think people are making up a lot of extra shit themselves
I am neither Baptist nor Roman Catholic (or Irish Catholic even though that doesn't mean another denomination in the way that Polish Catholic refers to the PNCC http://www.pncc.org/), but very little of people's claims pass the doctrinal sniff test.

12. I know it's not it's own denomination..
though the man speaks of it like it's the One True form of catholicism (born and raised in small town Indiana, too, lol).

I think you are right, people are making shit up. I always wonder, what percentage have really read the Bible, yanno?

Edited on Tue May-02-06 09:42 PM by JVS
It's not only not endorsed by the church, it's considered an abomination

5. Didn't all those Hal Lindsay books
discuss the end of time? That was pre-9/11.

There have always been bands of roving nuts saying the second coming is upon us. I tend to nod and back away slowly...

7. The fact becomes more tragic for me day by day....
people are just stupid. Irredeemably, irretrievably stupid.

It truly pains me. I really feel very alone out in the wide world. Thank God for
DU.

13. All of a sudden?
The Christian wingnut "Jesus is coming to Rapture us into heaven" crowd have been around for decades. They scare converts into being ready for the return of Christ and not being "left behind" to suffer in the great Tribulation under the Antichrist. The trouble is that they fall all over each other to kneel at the feet of any politician who mouths the right Christian phrases and claims to be "born again". They wouldn't know the Antichrist if he pissed 666 on their foreheads. Yet they are the people responsible for giving us Messianic George who believes he is an instrument of God to bring about the return of Jesus. God help us all.
