8. Assuming both parties are attractive to begin with, usually men do.
Women tend to fight aging too hard and it sometimes leads to looking really fake and desparate in one's clinging to thier youth.

Men usually just get an impractical car instead of going for that Katherine Harris "I put my plastic surgeon's kids through the Ivies" look.

On the plus side, my dad aged early. So I seemingly got the one good gene from her.

12. in real life women do
unless they're in show business men do not trouble to maintain themselves

what good is having the technology to prolong a youthful appearance if you don't bother to avail yourself of it?

14. In reality,
I think women do, for various reasons.

However, with cultural expectations so high on women...and it is usually the young, pre-motherhood ideal. Any deviation from that seems to take away from their beauty. (in the eyes of society)

I think men are allowed to age ungracefully, and may be seen as the more attractive. They are allowed the grey hair and the lines, the little belly is 'cute', etc.

Women take better care of themselves...and it think it shows as they age. I'll agree with LeftyMom's statement that women who try to look 20, but are 50 are quite sad indeed. Men may do the same, however (is it really necessary to comb over those three last hairs?)

15. Ka-ching!
We have a winna!

Women are not afforded the same rights as men to age "ungracefully." For that matter, they aren't afforded the same rights to look less than appealing at any age.

As a result, our concept of "appealing" differs by gender. I see women here drooling over guys I'd consider average-looking, whereas it typically takes a Kelly Brook or other Hollyweird crank-'em-out to get a reaction from most guys.

We've come a short way, baby. :eyes:

21. Men are hard wired to appreciate youthfulness as beauty
Older women who still give off a younger vibe (it has to do with facial symmetry, clearness of skin, clearness of eyes and breast/waist/hip ratios) are considered attractive. This is attractive across cultures. Give a Ghurka pictures of (current) Liz Taylor, Goldie Hawn or Scarlett Johansen and ask him to pick the most attractive the overwhelming amount of times he will pick Scarlett.

Men are considered attractive for things other than appearance alone.

35. Of course we are speaking in generalities
Individuals are so varied in their sexual attraction to speak otherwise would be nonsensical. For example there are people who are furries - and that shit is sick.

41. Please cite your authority for the "men being hard-wired to appreciate

...the American paradigm of female model/moviestar beauty" theory, because I have heard this "hard-wired" claim on numerous occasions but have yet to see credible research to back it up. Without substantive research, it could just as easily be a lame excuse to drool over supermodels without taking responsibility for contributing to most women's self-esteem/body hatred issues.

I am also interested to learn how you correlate your claim that this "hard-wiring" is so genetically ingrained in men as to cross cultures with the fact that many cultures prefer women who do not fit the stereotypical ideal of female beauty that we worship here in the US.

For example:

We are talking totally natural here ~ I've seen so many men who look like they are out with their mothers.
The guys really do look better.

37. I blame the media.
Men of all ages are shown as sexy. Women are only sexy in if they are under 30.
In the movies, men in their sixties are paired with women in their twenties and thirties. Can you think of many examples of women in their sixties paired with younger men? It's very rare indeed.

Did they all get together in the 1950s to decide to exclude older women?

38. I think in general that women do.
Of course, it all depends on genetics and environmental and health factors, like smoking, exposure to UV rays, etc. When I look at older women and older men, I think in general women are now taking better care of themselves than they used to. Older men haven't quite yet gotten a grasp on it, though, and it shows. I know many more women than men who look younger than their age.

40. I really think it depends on the individual.
I know overall people will say men, but I don't think it's a universal truth. George Clooney is an excellent example of a man who gets more and more attractive with age; Val Kilmer, however, is an example of someone who has not aged as well.

Audrey Hepburn looked as beautiful as ever as she aged:
