Vetheuil, 1901. Turns out Monet did several paintings of Vetheuil, but I saw this one at an exhibit in Atlanta, and fell in love with it.

Sadly, they had no prints of it in the gift shop. It's from the Pushkin museum in Moscow. Maybe I should contact their gift shop--do they have those in Russian museums?

But my favorite isn't the Kiss, it's the Philosophy, Medicine, Jurisprudence series. When I was living in Europe, my girlfriends were so lovely as to get me for one birthday a trip for all of us to Vienna, with the express purpose of seeing these amazing works of art:

It wasn't until after they'd booked the tickets and I had done some more research that I realised they had all been destroyed!

p.s. sorry for the size -- I can't find a bigger one.

Edited on Thu May-04-06 10:10 PM by Jean Louise Finch
At the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, they have this Singer-Sargent that is just magnificent:

on edit: I should explain the connection. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is in Boston, and this particular painting is huge -- takes up a whole wall -- and is just emoting off the wall with its color and passion.

The full title of this painting is:

THE DOG BY THE LAKE ON THE WALL OF MY ROOM
HAS NO THOUGHTS OF A HIGH HEELED SHOE
WHICH COMES UP FROM BEHIND ON THE FOOT OF A GHOST
WHO WAS PIERCED BY A FRUIT—(SOME WOULD FEAR)

BUT I LOOK THROUGH EYES OF THE FACE OF A LION
AND THE DEER LOOKS THROUGH EYES OF A DEER
WHILE BARBARA LOOKS INTO A ROOM OUT IN FRONT
AND WAITS FOR HER SOUL TO APPEAR

WHILE SHIRLEY LOOKS INTO A BELL GLASS JAR
AND WAITS FOR HER SOUL TO APPEAR

70. I have a one-of-a-kind of Starry Night
When MrSG was in art school, they had an assignment called "A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words." They could do anything they wanted for the assignment. He made a faux poster for the Seattle Arm Museum. The picture on the poster was Starry Night. It was done with colored pencils, and the entire thing was made up of the words do Don McLean's "Vincent" ("Starry Starry Night"). It's an amazing piece of work. From regular viewing distance, you can't really tell what the picture is composed of, but step a little closer, and you can read the words.

And so I have many "favorites."

Among the artists I enjoy a great deal are Rassouli (http://www.rassouli.com)

Just a few Examples:

Josephine Wall

Schim Schimmel

and others

I also enjoy Edward Hopper. One of my favorite pieces of his is this one:
Rooms by the Sea

I also enjoy a few other artists, including the group of Seven from Canada--there are actually more like 20, not 7, because through the years, the artists often changed; Paul Peel, another Canadian, who died very young, but painted in a very old fashioned, traditional manner; and perhaps a fairly long list of artist we're all familiar with: DaVinci, Monet, VanGogh, etc.
