91. The problem with Katherine is she wants to be a power ballad singer

and either she just doesn't either have the voice control (fixable) or the actual vocal ability (perhaps not fixable) to do it.

She butchered "Can't Help Falling...." and Simon's comments were dead on. It's a pretty, understated ballad that doesn't need to rise to a crescendo to be effective but Katherine needed a power "move" to go on to next week and she blew it.

I love him. He makes me smile, he's sunny, he seems to have a spark that the others are missing. IMO. Chris looked hella nervous/something on his mind today. Elliot has a great voice for sure, and I like him too...but he doesn't have that Taylor spark. Like Chris too...but he's not a pop singer. :shrug:

Katherine is just horrendous, and besides, do we really, really need another Jessica Simpson/Kelly Clarkson/insert female who emotes all the time wannabe? She looks like a lovely person, but her singing is eh, heard it before.

1) Elliott: Soared/Soared (His best performances all season, but stop overenunciating the Rs)
2) Katharine: Sank/Soared (She desperately needs a new costumer, and just pick a note when you end a song)
3) Taylor: Sank/Soared (Too little, too late)
4) Chris: Kinda floated all the way through (When you start wondering what SPF he needs for his scalp, you know you've lost interest in the song (the Elvis-glasses move was cheesey supreme)

Sorry, look at the history of the top two contestants on Idol:

Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini, Reuben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino, Diana DeGarmo, Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice.

How many of them have really had any mainstream success after the Idol shows? Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Bo Bice. What do they have in common? They're young, pretty, and sing canned mainstream music well. The other finalists have only had success in niche markets (Reuben is now a gospel singer), or haven't had any success at all.

The music industry is an evil business, and if you can't draw in a huge following right away and make them tons of money, they aren't going to promote you. Young, pretty, and generic...those are the rules.


Both Chris and Katherine can sing well, and are young/pretty enough to pull it off. Elliot? I can't see him ever making the top 40, and to be perfectly honest his personality has always reminded me of a lounge/wedding/bar mitzvah singer. Mr Gray? He doesn't have the look, style, or personality to be marketed to the teen and twenty-somethings that make up the bulk of the album buying public.

Being a star requires a lot more than just a good voice. At this point, all four have the voice down, but only Chris and Katherine have the rest of the package.

Elliott would go. Personally, I also wanted Elliott to go. But I'm sure glad Katharine stayed. Lately Katharine has given into the temptation to oversing, and I know she's better than that. The start of "Can't Help Falling In Love" was great. Chris sung his Elvis songs with too much self-seriousness. He showed more range in the vote-off show.

Taylor had the best night and will probably win unless his fans get complacent. They are so devoted that I doubt they will.
