Parents- is it just me or do kids always time thier growth spurts for when
one can least afford to get them new clothes?

In the six weeks since I lost my job my son has gone from a comfortable 4T to his 5's being a bit snug. I haven't measured, but it looks like he's put on an inch or two as well.

I'm glad he's healthy and growing, but I really hadn't anticipated him outgrowing his birthday wardrobe within a month.

1. Nope...it's not just you.
It's a Rule. Happens to me ALL the time.

Just wait until he hits middle school and you can't buy his stuff a size bigger any more in anticipation of the growth spurt.

2. yup, shoes, clothes
new backpack... it all seems to hit at the strangest times. That's why I was so fond of the thrift stores.

3. They do seem to time it right, don't they?
Do you have any consignment shops around you? I get 98% of my kids' clothing at a children's consignment shop. I take in the clothes that they have outgrown and get 40% cash or 50% credit towards purchasing more clothing. That store saves us a huge amount of money. I don't know what I would do without it and I find a wider selection of things than I do at Goodwill (also this store is cheaper than Goodwill).

4. Yeah, mine tend to gain a bunch of weight first too.

They initially "chub-out" of their clothes, then grow a ton and go back to "normal". Oh, the joys. :eyes:

5. He does that.
His pants are getting tight again, so I know I have to start getting bigger clothes for him. Usually he'll get a little on the chubby side, then sprout up a few inches almost overnight.

6. I just wish ours would quit stealing my clothes.
I lose about 2 pairs of pants per month.

9. Yes! MMjr grew straight through several sizes of shoes.
He's 12 years old and now wears a men's 11 shoe.

Thank god that he loves to wear t-shirts. We can get those a little roomy and he can wear them for a while.

10. Actually, I think that kids time
their growth spurts inbetween that time you buy school clothes and when school actually starts.

Last year I had to take back everything I had purchased for my daughter three weeks earlier because of a surprise growth spurt the night before the first day of school.

11. My 17-year-old now wears bigger pants and shirts than his dad
and is sleeping 8 hours a night and taking naps in the afternoon after he gets home from school. (Which I think means he's headed for another 'spurt').

Grandparents had to search high and low to find a watch that would fit his wrist for Confrimation gift! :wow:
