6. yeah, but he did show personality last night
chris in my opinion has a very boring personality, at least he did this week. catherine has a more broadway-ish voice, and taylor although he has a good voice, is mainly just there because he has a great personality. if you could cross chris's looks, with taylor's personality, and with elliot's voice you would have yourself a perfect star! :P

26. OMFG -- seriously -- I have no interest in the rest of the season now
But, it might be the best thing for him. Fuel said they wanted him as their new lead singer... I doubt 19 will sign him. The two Simons are having a fit, I bet -- they wanted Chris. They don't want another Michael Buble, a niche-market Taylor, or another white girl... although Katherine is the most marketable.

Oi. Well, that just freed up my Tuesdays...

Chris makes me wanna release an egg.

No reason to watch now.

I thought Paula was going to run out of the theater screaming!!! Simon just looked like he saw a big bag o' money flying out the window. La Seacrest looked like the cat that swallowed the canary because Chris turned down La Seacrest's sexual advances and now he got his revenge. Randy just looked like he wanted a burger and fries.

Chris looked PISSED!

66. I am disgusted!
He is the only one with sales potential, and the only one besides taylor with a strong voice. During the group sing, you could hear chris every time he opened his mouth. Clear and beautiful! Elliott has a wimpy voice, no meat to it at all. B O R I N G.

what about Fuel?!?!! I hadn't heard about the lead singer bit, is that true? can he do that with the AI contract?

if it weren't for Taylor, AI would be off my TV for good. If he gets voted off, I am done. elliot and Katharine suck.

81. Fleabert is right
Elliott does have a great voice -- he and Katherine have the best voices in the top ten... but Fleabert is right: Chris is truly marketable, Elliott isn't. Elliott can do okay in a niche market, like Michale Buble, or do very well on a cruise ship, having his own show in Branson, or as a session singer. All of those are GREAT music careers. But, Chris is the only truly marketable person that was as left. MAYBE, MAYBE Katherine with tweaking... but Chris was literally MTV ready.

Elliott does have the voice, but isn't an entertainer. And you have to eb to make it big -- and that's what the show is about. They want another Kelly Clarkson, and Chris would probably have been THE best bet since season one for that.

It's American Idol, not America's Best Singer.

89. Chris is marketable fronting a rock band.
Edited on Thu May-11-06 08:05 AM by AtomicKitten
That appeal doesn't rock my world.

I would never call an opinion wrong, by the way; I would disagree.

Not at all impressed with Katharine. I think her beauty may have bamboozled some as beauty tends to do.

Don't underestimate Elliott. If you've been watching, hopefully you've witnessed the metamorphosis of an entertainer. He's worked hard and I really admire that. I think he'll do just fine.

Regardless, the American media market can bear the addition of several of these talented people.

No worries. Their success will be judged in record sales. I'd buy Elliott's and Taylor's records; Chris will have his market as well.

And all is well in the universe.

Funny how people here talk about marketability, but it is America that is voting for these people. But the good news is American has a huge market for music sales, something for everybody, and many of these contenders will find some success. You don't have to win to be a winner.

120. votefortheworst.com
they picked Taylor after Pickler left...he got more votes that way than he would have otherwise.

I think most of America votes the songs- Chris's songs - historically- are not across the board favorites, but he will be the bigger money maker of the four. That type of music sells more records, period.

I adore Taylor and hope he wins- but he won't be as successful as Chris, even with him getting voted off this week.

if taylor gets voted off before elliot, I am done with this season.

He was horrible the night before. Both songs. Katharine needs to pick a pitch. I love Taylor; he's a great entertainer but not technically a great singer. It is Elliott that has never hit a bad note. Ever. I posted a thread with MP3 downloads of all his material if you are inclined to check out the veracity of that statement. Katharine should have gone home tonight, then Chris.

I am THRILLED Elliott and Taylor are in the finals. I think Elliott deserves the win.

113. The judges did not like his performance(s) the day before he was bounced.
So, actually they apparently agreed with America. You're right though, he was expected to win, but he didn't. America voted and that is the consensus. Hey, he has a nice rock and roll band frontman voice and will do fine.

Taylor's Ray Charles/Joe Cocker impersonation is entertaining and he is a showman. I appreciate his style. I got sucked into AI because of him.

But Elliott has evolved. I really love his smooth vocal stylings (ha, ha).

What is cool about AI is the exposure it brings to many of the finalists.

besides, my point was it's just a freaking tv show. everyone should chill out. some people like chris, some people like taylor, some people like elliot, and some people like catherine. that's no reason for everyone to start attacking each other.

And a lot of times it's just the person who you take a liking to from the beginning. It's amazing how good someone can sound just because you like that person. And I include myself in that. I like Chris from the beginning. To me he was the most real of them all. But, again that is just what I saw.

94. Kat survived last night for the reason Pickler survived 2 horrible weeks
Edited on Thu May-11-06 09:16 AM by Mike Daniels
Without argument, Kat's a better vocalist than Pickler.

However, I think Kat realized a few weeks ago that Pickler's wardrobe choices were helping to negate weak vocal performances and I noticed that Kat started flashing significantly more skin as the competition grew tighter.

The funny thing is Kat really didn't show off anything this week so there must be some general spill-over from the yellow dress (2 weeks back) and her "floor" performance last week. It's the only thing that accounts for her advancing despite giving 3 bad performances out of 4 songs selections over the last two weeks.

I'm betting Kat goes full out next week in an attempt to knock off Elliot.

Chris, Elliott, Paris, etc. have styles of singing... Taylor has a shtick.

And, Chris sings very alt rock, definitely not metal. Metalheads everywhere are probably freaking as they read that.

From American Heritage Dictionary: shtick is "An entertainment routine or gimmick."

53. But don't entertainers need a shtick?
Most entertainers can't go on ability to sing alone anymore. The days of great singers standing there with their lips glued to the microphone are long gone. Taylor is a heck of a singer when he does the ballads. But he needs the shtick to entertain the crowd when he doesn't do ballads.

80. I think there's a difference between performing and a "shtick"
James Brown has a shtick, the Rolling Stones perform. Taylor has a shtick, Gabriel performed.

As I said, I'll have to agree to disagree with some people on this.

60. What really pisses me off
is that because you know we had to see Taylor do that ridiculous rendition of "Jailhouse Rock" again, Chris didn't get a proper sing-off.

I mean, what was the purpose? I could see if it had been one of those "WOW" moments like Fantasia's "Summertime" or Bo's "In A Dream" or something. But it was a piece of dreadful karaoke nonsense.

107. Taylor = White boy sings R&B
I realize there are a lot of people who are enjoying it (and that's totally cool) but for me it BFD.

There are lots of current artists out there that do the same thing which hardly makes Taylor unique and definitely not the best at what he does.

He's entertaining within the context of AI but personally if I'm going to watch a white guy sing while dancing all herky-jerky past this current season I'll watch "Stop Making Sense".

Chris was a screamer? Taylor is the one with no range who has to scream to get to any high notes. Chris did it within the context of a rock song, when it was appropriate. Chris had some very understated singing as well as his rock side.

86. Agreed -- and "Country Roads" made me realize that
Taylor is a very good performer in his own way, but is not much of a true singer. Katherine and Elliott are way better than him, Chris is, Paris (whom I do not like at all!) is. Even Pickler is in a way -- she she totally raw and needs lots of technical training, but I think her actual talent is more than his.

There's nothing wrong with liking Taylor -- I've liked people on AI who weren't the best singers or the best performers (I loved Kim Locke) -- but it is a bit disingenuous to say he's this great singer, or that other people suck. Everyone in the top five were decent singers, with Taylor and Paris being the weakest as singers... I think Paris because of her age.

Even my Growly Beardy Bear Bo was pitchy and had little range -- I admitted that. I said that... I recognized my Bojangles' limitations...

with those that said Chris didn't have the best voice. He was the most versatile and was clearly the most consistent performer. His range is incredible for a male vocalist. Even all of the star coaches thought he was the best. Simon never went negative on him.

There is no doubt Chris will be a big star. None of the three remaining will even come close. However, I do think Elliot is very talented. He doesn't have a niche though. Taylor will end up as a successful wedding singer.

If Bush can become president than Taylor can be the next American Idol.

52. I disagree
To me Chris was one of the least versatile. He only sang songs that were done by certain types of bands. He doesn't know enough to be versatile. When he had to do a 50s song he did a remake of a Johnny Cash song by "Live", when he had to do Stevie Wonder he said he didn't know any of Stevie's songs until he found out that The Chili Peppers did "Higher Ground" and he did that sort of thing the whole time.

I am of the belief that you must know your craft to be good at it and Chris doesn't know much of it. His voice is good, but one dimensional in my opinion.

Elliot has a great voice but lacks much charisma and sometimes that can't be taught. Taylor has been performing for a while and has at least one full cd out already. He might not become a huge star, but I think he has the best chance to be recorded and marketed fairly well.

67. Too bad about Chris, but he was only adequate last night.
Neither of his performances were impressive. Katharine and Taylor each had one stellar performance, and Elliott nailed it both times.

So, for last night only, Chris should've gone. For the season's repertoire, Taylor should've been booted. I know people say they find him entertaining, but Plan 9 From Outer Space is entertaining, too. (Someone give that man an Ex-Lax, already!)

At this point, I think the contest is Katharine's to lose.

73. Chris's departure was somewhat of a surprise
Personally, I think Elliott was the only strong performer last night. I agree with Simon that Taylor's "Jailhouse Rock" was too karaoke, but I thought he redeemed himself on "In the Ghetto". Katharine's "Hound Dog/All Shook Up" medley was terribly average, and I didn't really care for the medley idea. I enjoyed her rendition of "Can't Help Falling in Love", even though it was poo-pooed by Simon (and "Can't Help Falling in Love" is one of my favorite Elvis tunes, too). Chris's "Suspicious Minds" was good, but his "A Little Less Conversation" was ruined by his meaningless screaming at the end. Elliott was superb with both his performances.

At this stage of the competition, it would have been disappointing to see any of the 4 contestants leave; that's how talented they are (and talent is in the eyes of the beholder, Idol naysayers). As talented as Katharine is, I think she would make the most boring album if she were to win the competition. It might sell well, but would probably a bland rip-off of Kelly Clarkson's music (and I never found Kelly's music to be that thrilling, anyway). Chris would churn out an album of the kind of alterna-rock that dominates the playlists of "new rock" radio stations, and would probably sound like all the other artists of that genre. Taylor and Elliott are probably the only ones who could release an album that would be unique in today's pop music scene. Whether they would sell well, I don't know, but at least I think they would be unique.

78. I would buy both Taylor's and Elliott's CDs.
I really love them both. I have never watched AI's season, just the preliminary freakshow auditions. It was Taylor that hooked me in. But I have watched Elliott with a brilliant yet inexperienced voice grow over the weeks, and I am in awe. He comes from a poor background with horrendous medical problems, and I think this will change his life. Taylor has already cut two CDs.

I am THRILLED they are both in the finals. I don't like Katharine. I think she needs to pick a pitch. I won't miss her when she is eliminated next. I will be happy if either of the boys wins, but I'm rooting for Elliott. His voice is pure and soulful, and the boy has NEVER hit a funky note.

I am one happy camper tonight.

112. Yep, we definitely agree!
I love Elliot's voice! And I'm tired of people talking about him being a niche singer. EVERY singer is a niche singer. Last year's winner, Carrie, sings country... a niche! I'll never hear her music because I don't like country. I've never heard Fantasia on the radio because I don't listen to the stations that would play her type of music. But I just might hear Elliot on the radio because I listen to jazz and the old classics.

So what I'm saying is that maybe AI is ready for yet another different type of singer to win it all. Taylor is alright and I enjoy his performances. Katharine is a dime a dozen type of singer, nothing special.

I was not terribly surprised that Chris went. He should have won it all but now he can do what he wants rather than have to do what Fox wants. He's a rocker and Fox would be trying to market another Clay Aiken.

Elliott and Taylor were the best on Tuesday but Taylor is maybe the fourth or fifth best of the contestants. I agree with Simon somewhat in that you can hear singers like Taylor in bars and lounges all across America. And the term "wedding singer" does come to mind a lot when I hear him.

I like Elliott to win it all now but with America's taste for middle of the road it will probably be Taylor.

I won't watch the rest. I just watched to hear Chris sing.

but I've never liked Chris anyway. It seems like he doesn't know the history of music and doesn't really embrace it all that much. He sung Live's version of a Johnny Cash song even though he was required to do a song from a certain time period and didn't even admit to using Live's version until the following week. The judges being the rock enthusiasts that they are didnt even notice a thing and praised Daughtry for being so "original." With that being said, Chris still deserved to stay another week.
