Does anyone use "Dear (____)" when beginning an e-mail?
No, this has nothing to do with California Peggy.

But you know how as kids we were taught to begin writing a letter with "Dear so-and-so", but I don't think that has transended into e-mail culture.

Or even in today's business letters. Has the salutation "Dear" become obsolete?

1. I do.
At least some of the time.

In formal work e-mails - always.

Personal ones - depending on mood.

2. I always do for work e- and paper mail, and nearly always
in personal emails. It's just how you open up a letter or note to anyone.

3. In more formal situations, sure.
With people I know, not really. Though I'll still use the "Love, _______" sometimes with friends.

4. Yes, I use it all the time, for work-related emails. But the closures!
I hate using "Sincerely" and rarely use it. I also hate "cheers" and "regards" but sometimes use them and feel totally phoney.

6. What do you use, just your name?
I usually just use "thank you" as a thanks for taking the time to read my letter or e-mail.

12. I'll use either Thank you, or just a dash and my name.
Unless it's more formal, then I grit my teeth and type cheers or regards.

18. I like "Best,"
As in

Best,

Tyrone Slothrop

Because 9 times out of 10, I do wish the best for whomever I'm writing so it doesn't feel forced or phony.

5. Very rarely.
And usually it's just when writing a silly email to my SO's mom. (Mom #2 I call her)

My SO and I sometimes start our emails to eachother like that but only because we think it's funny.

8. Sometimes I use it, and sometimes I don't.....
It depends on my mood, and if I'm in a hurry or not....

Sometimes I use the salutation at the end as well.....and sometimes not...

As far as I'm concerned, the "dear" has not become obsolete!

It is a good question.....:hi:

a lot of people in my business use "Hi ...." and close with at least a
"thanks", but more often a "thanks and regards" or "b regards"
and yes people do shorten the best to just "b".

25. But, even when you write close acquaintances,
do you still use the letter format? I tend to, mostly because one line emails always seem kind of terse in tone. I have to remind myself sometimes that it is largely the medium that creates that effect.

15. Dear Dr. XXXXX
It never seemed wierd to me, but when I get letters or email from Germany, it's funny to see a prof start a letter with "Lieber JVS"

21. Generally, I do.
With a formal e-mail, it's necessary. With friends and family, I might sometimes drop the "dear" and simply begin with the person's name, followed by a comma, with a space between that and the first line of the message.

23. I try to avoid it
"Dear" just seems archaic to me in an e-mail. I use "Hi ___" if I'm on a first-name basis with the person. If it's business and I don't know the person, I often use "Mr. Soandso:" or "Ms. Soandso--"

Please stop sending me the constant harassing email. Also, please refrain from calling me at home.

I appreciate the friendship we had, but please do not make me get law enforcement involved.

Thank you

AS OPPOSED TO

See? Emails just shouldn't start with "Dear"

27. Its just an example. Sometimes being impersonal works
Granted, given the context of the email, adding "dear" before the name might only enocurage the OP to persist with their behavior, right?

;)
