2. That's what I thought.
I loved her rendition of "Blues in the Night" by the way when she was mistakenly known as "Dinah Shaw."
I remember she had a TV show. Was it on in the afternoon?

3. Not sure when it was on
I remember an interview Burt did with Larry King. He said he wanted to marry Dinah but she wouldn't marry him because he hadn't sowed his wild oats yet.

Another thing Burt said in that interview made me really admire Dinah. He said she kissed Nat King Cole on her show, which just wasn't done at the time. There had never been any black & white kissing televised. After it was aired a bunch of the stations pulled her show from their line up. She wouldn't back down & said the next week she was planning to kiss Sidney Poitier & she did! :toast:

I bet she was one of them liberal democrats!

20. Actually, the truth is,
Dinah Shore had blacks in her own lineage--I'm not sure whether t was on her mother's or father's side, but I believe one of her grandparents was black.

Burt Reynolds actually put out an album, and Dinah is on one of the background tracks.

11. Yes, she had a talk show that was on in the afternoons
Sometimes she sang, if I recall, but she mostly had guests. Apparently, she had several, but the one I think you're talking about, and I remember, was on 1974-1980.

13. Other rumors
There were also rumors back in the 1940's and 1950's that she was passing for white, that was actually part African-American. Supposedly the "truth came out" when she had her first baby and it was black. I think the rumors started because if you ever see pictures of her as a young girl she's got very dark hair and is brown-complected. much like Paula Abdul. She also had a nose job.

The Burt Reynolds/Dinah Shore romance was huge when I was a kid. It was one of the biggest tabloid stories of the early 1970's.

14. Wow! I never knew that. And, back then, this must have been considered
quite a scandal. Was her baby actually black? Her husband must have been surprised. I always thought that she was quite pretty.:-)

And I do remember her romance with Burt Reynolds, though I hardly gave it much thought, at that age. And I never understood why this was a big deal.

15. I don't believe it was ever actually proved to be true
Also, the whole "woman passing for white who has a black baby" story was always sort of a cautionary tale about why the "races shouldn't mix". I remember reading "Imitation of Life" when I was younger and in the book, the maid's daughter -- the one passing -- tells her mother that she's planning to marry a white man and the mother asks her about children. She says "I've taken care of that" which in those days meant she had herself sterilized so she couldn't have any. And if you've ever read anything about the eugenics movement that was going on back then, you know that was not a decision a woman of color would have made lightly.

Also, for what it's worth, I'm not even sure something like that is biologically possible.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the Dinah Shore had a black baby story probably belongs with the "Richard Gere and the gerbil" story.

17. This sounds like that era's version of an urban legend to me, too.
Dinah Shore might not have been naturally blonde, but she wasn't black, either. Maybe somebody resented her girl-next-door persona and had it in for her. Or maybe, as you say, some sicko was trying to make a point and used the most white bread personality they could think of as an example.:-(

I remember seeing Dinah Shore, her husband and daughter on "Make Room for Daddy," on TV Land, playing themselves. None of them were black.

And I am somewhat familiar with eugenics from an anthropology course I took back in high school. I can't remember the guy's name just now, Arthur Jensen (?), but didn't he claim that black people were genetically inferior? I had to take part in a debate for that class, on the pro-eugenics side, and I felt like a real fool. One of the guys in my class was a black kid from Ghana and he was probably the smartest guy in the school...x(

18. I don't know if that was his name or not
I remember there was a Nobel laureate scientist who made similar remarks (don't worry that wasn't why he won).

Did you ever read about The Kallikaks?

22. I looked him up, and I remembered the name correctly.
What a moran, but he seems to have had some influence in the academic community. He must have, if I studied his principles in school, though nobody, and certainly not me, seemed to take what he said seriously. And he also won a prize...:-(

And I do remember the Kallikaks! We discussed them in HS biology, my best HS course. There were two families that were studied, though I don't remember the name of the "intelligent" one, but the Kallikaks were an example of low intelligence and inbreeding. Do I have that right?

24. They were a hoax
Actually, it turns out the Kallikaks never existed, but they were used as an example of how heredity trumps environment for many many years and how "bad genes" can last for generations which was considered a justification for the forced sterilization programs. Our library had a book from the 1920's which was purportedly a "biography" of the Kallikaks complete with pictures which was more or less a kind of screed about "see what happens when you let 'undesirables' have children?"

I think the other "family" was named the Jukes, weren't they?

26. Really?! I never knew that!
Either that, or I've forgotten, since it's been a lot of years since I was in high school.:-)

Wow! That is pretty horrible! And I sure was taken in. But I guess when you're 15, you lack the critical judgment that kids of that age now have, the ones on DU, anyway.

And what a memory! :wow:

Yup, I looked them up and the other family was named Jukes! I was sure that you were mistaken, since jukes is a member of DU and a friend of mine, LOL! He's a really nice guy who rescues feral cats and was of great help last year to a good friend of mine in rescue who was caring for two young mother cats, with six kittens between them, who needed advice.:D

29. Genetics and Heredity
I remember getting a book out of the library called "Your Heredity and Environment" when I was about 9 years old and that's when I first heard about the Kallikaks. I remember the story went that the original Mr. Kallikak was a Revolutionary War soldier who dallied with a barmaid and had a child and that's where the "bad" Kallikaks come from. Supposedly everyone from that side of the family turned out to be drunks, criminals, mentally disabled, etc. On the other hand, the descendants from his marriage to a farmer's daughter supposedly all became fine upstanding citizens and enjoyed robust good health. I can't remember when I found out that the stories about them were untrue, although I knew it by the time I read the book that was supposed to be their "true story".

23. Nope, not black. Worse than that she was Jewish!
:sarcasm:
Dinah Shore was born Frances Rose Shore on February 29, 1916 in Winchester, Tennessee. She was the second daughter born to her parents, Solomon and Anna Stein Shore who were Russian Jewish immigrants.
