Love the flowers, Peggy!

A question about this weather though...is this early June gloom? Cuz I'm getting a little sick of this hazy crap that's covering up my sun. :grr:

I'm so happy that you're enjoying these!

I was sooo careful to avoid the numerous weeds!

Alas, yes, this is our annual "June gloom" a bit early......

It is the BANE of living at the beach! I hate it!

It will most likely leave by July......Sorry!

I was hoping June gloom wasn't any worse than this!

I'll just settle back and expect it to last a while, no biggie.

And hey, at least it's finally warm!

6. The last one looks like a hydrangea
Edited on Fri May-12-06 06:51 PM by Xipe Totec
what is it?

First one is Allium, right?

Third one, I call Tempazuchitl, the traditional flower to honor the dead in Mexico (Choreopsis)

45. We're both right!
Edited on Sat May-13-06 06:08 AM by Xipe Totec
But I should have said AN allium, rather than say just allium.

(the scientific name for chives is allium schoenoprasum)

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/factsheets/herbs/allium_schoenoprasm.html

Those are choreopsis, but I was wrong; it is the marigold that is the flower of the dead, not choreopsis. I often confuse choreopsis with the single petaled marigolds.

The right spelling is zempoalxochitl, but it is also spelled cempazuchitl. The cultivation of the cempazuchitl or Day of the Dead flower (Tagetes erecta Linnaeus) has gone on as long as there have been civilizations in Mexico. Cempazuchitl is a Nahuatl word meaning twenty flower. The flowers are used lavishly to decorate graves and altars dedicated to the honor the dead. Cempazuchitl petals are strewn from the graveside to the house, the strong fragrance of the flowers helping to guide the spirits home.

Oops! I forgot that not everyone would know that allium is the scientific name for the onion family.

I'm growing several types of alliums myself.

On edit: Tagetes, not coreopsis. Gotcha. They do have a similar look.

49. Thanks for the wonderful pics
I wish I could have my garden this year, but I will be spending over half of my summer vacation in Germany.

My photos of the Atlantic sunrises will also be delayed: I have been selected for jury duty two days after school is over. So spending time at my second home is now on hold. Dagnabbit! (Look, no F-Bomb!) :silly:

Last year I could not figure out what was happening to my marigolds. I discovered later what was going on: my neighbor's lab puppy was eating them. :9

You really need to try it. Don't use the stems, though, after they flowered, they will be real hard and chewy.

bachelor buttons?

We cleared out a 60 foot, 100 year old row of pecan trees last May and built a bed of flowers. The soil is so rich that my hollyhocks are over 10 feet high and growing! Its full of butterfly bush, butterfly weed, Turks turban, sweet peas, climbing brown-eyed susan, foxglove, sweet william and various perennial hibiscus. Just wait until mid-summer!

63. How embarrassing! I have chives and garlic chives but all the blooms
are white. As to pictures, I'm rather comuter illiterate, but we do have a scanner now since we bought a new computer ("Dud, we got a Dell!). My partner retires in two weeks (30 years of teaching Spanish) and I'm going to put him in charge of learning how to really use our computer so maybe, eventually, we can figure out how to post pictures. I'm assuming we'll have to buy a digital camera first and then learn how to use it in connection with this infernal machine. Its all so complicated and I have little patience.

64. When you have a digital camera, you won't need a scanner.....
You just download the software from the camera into the computer, and follow the directions....

It takes a little getting used to, but once you have it down, you'll wonder how on earth you ever did without it!

It is soooooo much fun! I love love love posting pictures!
