Spock quote i love:
"Behavior is best conceptualized in terms of dimensions, not as categorical variables. Precision suffers whenever you use typological measures, not continuous scales" Spock said.

"What is THAT supposed to mean?" McCoy asked.

"Conceptualize in dimensional terms, Doctor. In other words, do not think in terms of black or white, nor shades of gray, since, metaphorically speaking, that is a two dimensional model, lacking in depth and subtlety. When one judges a thing such as the 'soul' of a man, it's imprecise to weigh it with a scale not designed to take its full measure, which does injustice to the man."

6. Hope this doesn't hijack your thread....
but, REALLY, how much cooler is Star Trek than Star Wars? I'm not a huge Sci Fi fan, but Star Wars has very little in the way of actual ideas about life in the future. And I'm really put off by the fact that there is never more than ONE woman in Star Wars! Granted, Captain Kirk was more of a "free love" type than a Feminist, but at least the show featured women who weren't princesses.

41. I'll have to see the stats on Star Trek 2.0
They show tOS on the G4 channel every night and have "Star Trek" stats on - how many times Spock says "logical", how many times Uhura touches her ear, etc. I think one of them is how many women Kirk gets...

It's takes place a long time ago in a galaxy really far away.

24. Hmmm. Good point.
But for a far away galaxy, it certainly is a twin of western civilization on Earth.

Anyway, the story just doesn't engage me. It's more of a shoot 'em up western set in space.

25. But you are making a false comparison -
One really can't compare Star Wars against Star Trek, because the intents of each are entirely different.

Star Wars' intent is simply to tell a myth-level story using archetypal characters and metaphors; it only happens to be in a setting involving space craft and lasers and other "science fictiony" stuff. The entirety of the Star Wars ark is, ultimately, just one story: the story of the descent into evil and redemption therefrom.

Star Trek's intent is to write stories that are good in and of themselves, but which are also commentaries on the present day. It only happens to be set in space in the future, but it really could have been set in the wild west or any other time. Star Trek is not one overarching story (except on a level that is not very relevant): the intent is to take the characters and keep placing them in different situations. It is an amalgamation of hundreds of stories, with no ultimate meta-story (other than that, perhaps, humanity DOES have the capacity to survive and do the right thing IF we can keep from killing ourselves today), only moral lessons and insights into what being a human being is about.

The only similarity between Star Wars and Star Trek is that they have spacecraft and species from multiple planets; otherwise, they are entirely different beings, and should not be compared, and one should not have to "take sides" about which is better. One might prefer one genre over the other (mythology vs. social commentary), but one should not be forced into the false choice between space stories.

The constant comparing of the two is a false effort. One might as well say "Which is better: Moby Dick or The DOS 6.0 Technical Guidebook?" or "Which is better: Welch's Grape Juice or Bordeaux?"

45. OK, OK....calm down everyone!
I knew I was skating on thin ice when I posted #6, which was a flippant, casual comment.

I'm no expert on Star Wars, as you can tell, perhaps because it never inspired me to think about it very much. I just happen to to like Star Trek better and stand by my assertion that Star Wars is sorely lacking female characters compared to Star Trek. IMHO, Star Trek also presented more interesting ideas than Star Wars.

30. Data's Ode to his cat, Spot
Ode To Spot

Felis Cattus, Is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature?

Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications

That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.

And when not being utilized to aide in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behaviour you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.

And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

14. Well, it turns out that's not actual dialog
It's fanfic. Searched and found this:

TOS Drabbles
By Laura Goodwin
A drabble is a short form of fiction that is popular among trek fanfic scribblers. The rule is you have to tell the whole story in exactly 100 words. These drabbles star Captain Kirk and Commander Spock, and feature scenes from the alternate Trek universe of my own imagination.

Other than the quote OR scooped me on, my favorite is when Bones called him a pointy eared Vulcan and Spock grabs him by the shirt and says:

"I don't like that. I don't think I ever did, and I'm sure now!"

This sequence is funny too, although I am paraphrasing

Spock: It looks like this is it.

Bones: A while back, you said there were always alternatives

Spock (arches brow): It seems I was mistaken.

Bones (mumbling) : At least I lived long enough to hear that.
