My Daddy needs some DU vibes shot his way...
Edited on Wed May-24-06 09:49 AM by MrsGrumpy
My father has been having some tests (MRI, CT, ultrasound) on a kidney mass he's had for three years. His old dr. said it was nothing and to watch it. New Dr. ordered these tests to rule out anything serious. Needless to say, they called me this morning looking for him because they couldn't get a hold of him and need to see him "right away". I'm sitting here sick with worry. I was able to get a hold of him and he has an appt. today at 11:30.

This is my father who has been so much to me and my kids. Background is that he was both a mom and a dad to me as a child when my mother couldn't be bothered. He raised my daughter while I was working... He is everything to us. I am so worried...so worried.

If you get a second, could you please think a good thought around 11:30 AM for a man who really really deserves to get good news? They'll be going to a good cause. He's a certified independent who can't stand the current administration.

Thanks,

Laura

31. ***Update**** The radiologist's report states that it is a mass that
is to be considered malignant until proven otherwise. It has a blood supply and showed up brighter than all the rest of the cysts on the scan. The good news is his lymph nodes and surrounding tissues appear unaffected, and he has an appointment for tomorrow at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit (The very best, I guess). The bad news...they're pretty positive it's cancer and the kidney will have to come out. He came over for coffee after he left the doctor's appointment and picked up his films... His major concern? That he will lose his job over this. This is my father and I am still kind of stunned. Thank you everyone for your good wishes; the stickies at the top of the board made me cry.

He has a biopsy tomorrow and I will keep you posted.

I can't lose my dad. I just can't. He was in the middle of such happiness and the future was looking so bright.

Thanks again,

Laura

37. Honey, you were a friend to me when I dealt with my father's cancer.
My dad kicked it, and GrumpyDad will overcome it, too.

That it is not in the lymph nodes is the best news you could have received.

Please ask for a PET scan to make sure it hasn't spread anywhere else.

As for you, you need to take care of yourself. If indeed it's cancer, you have a tough road ahead of you, and you need to depend on your friends for support--both those at DU and those in real life.

I didn't do that when I was helping my dad beat his cancer. As a result, I suffered from a bout of depression I just couldn't kick. The prospect of losing my father was one I just couldn't fathom. Watching him go through radiation and chemotherapy saddened me so, even though I knew that he was a trooper and doing the best he could to keep a strong face on for me and the other members of my family. Dad beat the cancer, and then I had to beat the depression.

I will PM my phone number to you. You don't have to call me now. But if you EVER need to talk, I've been there and I will be glad to give you friendly support.

My warmest regards to you and your family, sweetheart. Your friends are there for you. Don't go through this alone.

:loveya: :hugs:

40. I'm so sorry, but it is a good thing that the lymph nodes were uninvolved
I lost my mother to colon cancer in 1987 and will never forget the sickening feeling of tidal waves washing over me on the day of her diagnosis.

I will keep you and your dad in my thoughts and prayers. Be sure to maintain your routine as much as possible so you can keep your spirits up and thereby help him maintain his spirits. He can beat this!

46. He can live without one of his kidneys - so his chances are very good
Since it hasn't spread yet this is looking pretty good for him - though I know how scary this is. I remember when my Dad's mortality hit me between the eyes - it's a horrible feeling. I did lose him 8 years ago but his situation was different. He's got a great chance at many many more years.

Hang in there buddy.

68. MrsGrumpy, your dad is in my thoughts, and ...
I really hope that he pulls through.

If it's any consolation, I am not a doctor, but it sounds as though the mass is associated largely with his kidney. People can live without those-- they even donate them! Don't lose hope.

45. Oh, I'm so sorry
I know how scary this diagnosis is. My mother, when I was pregnant with my son, had breast cancer which had migrated into some lymph nodes and she had to have a partial mastectomy, with chemo and radiation.

The good news is, my son is now 14 and Mom is fine!

So cry, go through your feelings, but then try to calm down and know that this is not necessarily a death sentence.

Love, light and healing to you and your dad!
