Need basic (I hope) computer help!
Computer crashed 3 weeks ago (long story - tried to give local guy my business, never again) had to get a new hard drive because I want to try to recover data off old one.

Short version is I told them I would reinstall OS but he was running some kind of updates when I walked into shop and demanded my machine back. So last night I turn the thing on and tried to run windows updates and get this stupid verification issue with them that I am having trouble figuring out and can't seem to get all the security fixes yet (grrr) so I thought I better load spybot and adaware fast (have old version subscription of Norton) and I think I loadd something wrong because last night I had trouble turning off the computer and now norton says I have some kind of W32 spybot worm virus that it can't do anything about. I can't find the file either. HELP!

the original crash seems to have followed this sequence: on Monday night I updated Adobe reader (slow dial up - I do updades at night), rebooted tuesday morning seemed to work fine all day but that night it wouldn't shut down so after a while I shut it off with the power button. Wednesday it would not open to windows - kept getting error message that windows did not start successfully with options to start in safe mode, etc

argh now this new drive is already infected and it is going to close down - help any advice?

just got another alert from norton this one says virus is Download.Trojan. "unable to repair this file" either - crap what has happened?

things move faster in the lounge so was trying here first. (afraid the thing is going to quit on me any moment and it's 15 miles to the library where they will let me on for ONE hour in 24!)

http://ewido.net/en/ run their free scan and clean it will probably take care of your problem. Then if you can download get this http://freegrisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ it's an anti virus program that's free and blows the doors off everything else available.
Both of these are free, but you'll get better protection if you buy the service.

edit: I just looked at the avg page, try the free download.
