Trucker's Breathalyzer Registers 18 Times Legal Limit
:o

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- Police in Lithuania are amazed by a truck driver's Breathalyzer test.

They said the driver registered 18 times the legal alcohol limit.

At first, officers figured the machine was broken. It wasn't. Authorities said it must be an unofficial intoxication record.

One police official told The Associated Press that the man should have been dead -- and certainly not driving.

And got this from the story:

Police said Tuesday 41-year-old Vidmantas Sungaila registered 7.27 grams per liter of alcohol in his blood repeatedly on different devices when he was pulled over for driving his truck down the center of a two-lane highway 60 miles from the capital, Vilnius on Saturday. Lithuania's legal limit is 0.4 grams per liter. Medical experts say anything above 3.5 grams per liter of alcohol in the blood is lethal for most people.

A BAC of 0.10% means 1 gram per liter, so their limit is (in American terms) 0.04%, about half of the American standard of 0.08%.

Still, his BAC was 0.73%! Not just legally drunk--legally dead! (or should be--see below)

BAC
0.02-.03% Noticeable cognitive changes
0.15-.20% Person obviously intoxicated, delirium
0.30-.40% Loss of consciousness
0.50% Death

Edit: More from Wikipedia:
Unless a person has developed a high tolerance, a BAC rating of 0.20 represents very serious intoxication (most first-time drinkers would be passed out by about 0.15), and 0.35 represents potentially fatal alcohol poisoning. 0.40 is the accepted LD50, or lethal dose for 50% of adult humans. For a long-time, heavy drinker, those numbers can at least double. In extreme cases, individuals have survived BAC ratings as high as 0.914.

9. Darn those professional drinkers, cheating death all the time
Seriously, this is a person with a major drinking problem in order to build their tolerance up like this. I've know a few people who could match this guy, but their drinking habits, and lives, were not pretty things to observe.

saw post #1. Still the thought of a 1.44 BAC (18 times the CA limit) is disturbing.
