So, get this bullshit that happened to my sister.
My little sister is job hunting. She gets an interview at this place, it's the best money she'd ever make in her life so far.
The woman tells her, "I'm going to hire you. So, don't accept another job. I'm going to New York and I'll call you when I get back. I have some internal candidates to interview, but you've got the job."
So, she calls the employment agency to tell them she's been hire and they check it out and say, "Yes, you have been." She said she didn't know a start date but the agency said the woman told them she'd let her know upon her return.
So, nothing happens and when my sis calls this woman she says, "Oh, sorry my boss wanted me to hire someone from the inside." And a bunch of other shit.

I mean, what the fuck is that? I wanna pull big brother detail and go down there and start throwing my fists around.
Fuckers.

1. That's terrible
Can she sue them? I mean, didn't she have a verbal contract?

I'm not an attorney, just curious.

2. Don't know what she can do
Truly, the best thing is she should swallow it, play nice then keep in touch for the next gig.

4. I don't suppose she got anything in writing?
A friend quit a job in Montreal, and moved Vancouver because the manager of an upscale furnishings store (the name of which you no doubt know well) kept phoning him that she wanted him as a designer.

She changed her mind after he was finally well-ensconced in Vancouver.

Long story short, he got compensation after complaining to Labour Relations. I'm sorry I don't recall any other details (whether he had anything in writing, how much he received, how long it took, etc.) but it might be something worth pursuing.

Good luck to your sister.

11. Not even through the agency? Either way...
...have her check with Labour Relations.

Particularly if the company has had complaints from candidates in the past, they might be willing to listen.

14. Tell her to look at the bright side, she doesn't have to work with
that lying sack of $hit.

She might have ended up hating the place, and quitting anyway.

19. Something similar happened to me once. And at that
point in my life I couldn't afford to be without work for more than a couple of days. I had quit my previous job and everything when they blew me off. I was so pissed I ended up writing a scathing letter to the president of the company. I figured I was burning a bridge, which I knew wasn't a good idea, but I didn't care. I had to let them know how awful they were.

Long story short... the president of the company called me in person and we talked for an hour. Most of that hour consisted of him apologizing and me berating him (I know, I know, I just couldn't stop myself). He ended up giving me a better job in the company and I was his star for quite awhile. He even sent me to Japan to oversee some new product development, something he didn't even trust the vice president to do.

I eventually got fired (everyone at that company does eventually, it's a very weird place) but I lasted longer at that position than anyone had before. And I was the only person in the company not afraid of the president. Everyone else walked on eggshells around him.

Anyway, I'm sorry your sister has to endure this. I totally understand how much it sucks. Good luck to her. You're a good brother to care so much.

22. Look up Promissory Estoppel maybe

Not sure if it applies, but your sister shouldn't have to lose out if there were other jobs she could have taken or expenses she incurred.

23. Something similar to this happened to one of my best friends
She was offered a job by e-mail and drove from near St. Louis to Tacoma, Wash. for it. Got there and the business was failing, so there was no job.

She started a civil suit, but the guy died shortly after.

As the saying goes, shit outa luck.
