Am I overreacting?
I spent my whole day waiting on a check due in to day's mail, which I need to pay my bills. My credit union closes at 6 pm. The letter carrier normally gets here at 4:45 or so, which is already inexcusably late in the day as far as I'm concerned and means I have to rush to get to the CU before they close. My mail (and the check) just now got delivered. It's almost seven! Now I either have to deposit it at the ATM, get $100 and wait until the middle of next week for the rest to clear or take care of it on my already busy Saturday.

Am I wrong that getting the mail at almost 7 is rediculously late and worthy of a complaint?

1. I'm annoyed if my carrier comes after noon.
Of course I live virtually around the corner from a post office, but still. 7pm is way too late, and is unacceptable in my opinion. You're owed at least a valid explanation. 4:45 is too late in my opinion too, especially if you live in a city of any size.

2. I'm in the inner burbs of a big city
We never used to have this problem, there were two reasonably sized post offices nearby and our mail came in the morning or early afternoon like everybody else's. Eventually they consolidated several of the smaller offices into one big one way out in the middle of nowhere (now it's a ten minute drive to head over there, where before it was maybe three and two of that was a traffic light) just as a ton of new housing went up around here and service went to shit. :grr:

3. Brilliant planning....
...just brilliant. Idiots.

All in all, I think we have a pretty good postal service. Anyone who really complains never lived overseas (except for France - two deliveries a day, 7 days a week - phooey). But, I don't think it's too much to ask that people get their mail during the actual business day.

when our normal carrier is on vacation, I swear our route becomes an afterthought.

9. No, that's ridiculously late
That's December-like mail delivery times. I'd complain.

I get my mail at stupidly late times occasionally as well, especially when the regular carrier is on vacation. I've gotten it as late as 8 before, in April... :eyes:

13. i don't see what good it will do to complain
Edited on Sat Jun-03-06 01:54 AM by pitohui
you can complain if you like, years ago when i did so (nicely so as not to have my mail dumped in trash) it was explained to me that my letter carrier had the longest route in the parish

my sister claims that once in the 70s she complained abt her mail being delivered late and letter carrier, an alcoholic, took revenge and stopped delivering her mail at all but i won't vouch for the literal truth of that story -- she claimed to have written a very witty complaint letter, i sure wouldn't go that way

14. I would be livid
I've never gotten any mail past 3:00, with the exception that the regular worker was sick and noticed a new one making a later round.

The (regular) big jerk, however, often leaves the wrong mail in each mailbox (ie I get the neighbour's to the left mail, the neighbours to the right get my mail, etc) I've also had mail from a couple blocks down.

16. just checked with a friend here in our area, as a practical matter...
the mail, which is of course OUR mail, here in sacto, is supposed to be out as close to 5pm as possible, in that they know that that is when a good many banks close by 6 x(

17. Unfortunately, it seems the deed has been done.....
...is there any way you can contact your creditors to let them know the situation? Obviously, it's not your fault, so maybe you should go "on record" as to what happened. Sorry for this LM.

19. Well if they work until 5pm like everyone else - someone has
to get their mail at 4:45, right? Why would that be inexcusable?

Any delivery time between normal business hours I don't think is complaint-worthy.

7:00pm is not business hours, you could complain but I imagine what they would do depends on whether it's a pattern or a one-off.
