Lost Son of Krypton: Do you plan to see "Superman Returns"?
Edited on Wed Jun-07-06 11:24 PM by Radio_Lady
(EDITOR'S NOTE: THE MOVIE "Superman Returns" OPENS ON JUNE 28th)

by Mike Russell
(Film reviewer in Portland, Oregon)

Screenwriters Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty worked 24/7 to help Bryan Singer resurrect the Man of Steel, pitting Superman against his mightiest foe: roiling angst!

Superman’s return to the big screen is one of the most convoluted — and expensive — development stories in Hollywood history.

After 1987’s “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” cold-cocked the franchise that Richard Donner launched so reverently in 1978, the Man of Steel went into a 17-year development coma.

The behind-the-scenes saga is long, silly and mind-bogglingly pricey.

• There were abortive drafts (including a few by “Clerks” writer-director Kevin Smith) that tried to adapt the 1993 “Death of Superman” comic-book storyline, with producer Jon Peters allegedly suggesting the inclusion of giant spiders and/or computerized archvillain Brainiac fighting polar bears at the Fortress of Solitude.

• Tim Burton (“Batman,” “Planet of the Apes”) subsequently developed a version that reportedly jettisoned both the classic costume and Superman’s ability to fly, with Nicolas Cage donning whatever replaced the cape and tights.
• Wolfgang Peterson (“The Perfect Storm”) developed a “Batman vs. Superman” film.

• McG (“Charlie’s Angels”) and Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour”) were at different times attached to direct a controversial script by J.J. Abrams (TV’s “Alias”) that completely re-invented the Superman mythos against the backdrop of an interstellar war.

Enter director Bryan Singer — and Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris.

Dougherty and Harris had some experience with chaotic superhero franchises: They cut their teeth as a screenwriting team on the set of “X2” — working around the clock to help director Singer find a third act mid-shoot.

He has been through a lot. Personally, I wish him God speed to health. I had an oral surgeon who eventually died from cancer of the parotid glands. It's never good when it gets into your head -- might even affect your brain in the last stages.

125. He still had an email with all of the releases sent out today.
Doesn't Superman come out next Tuesday? I thought I heard the 28th. Looking at the calendar, it says Wednesday. Is that the start of the REALLY long 4th of July weekend? It would fit. Indendence Day. America. Truth, Justice and all that.

So Ebert should have a review sent out the day before the release.

In your article, he says: ""I'll continue to function as a film critic during this time."

There's your answer.

Clearly, there are print and internet reviewers who are breaking the embargo for whatever reasons.

I hope Singer, Routh, Bosworth, and Spacey deliver...the running time, i believe is just over two and a half hours....:)

This Saturday, I was expecting to see "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties" with my grandson. But I've been told only print reviewers are invited.

I'll have to wait until the week previous to opening on 6/28 to see if I am invited.

In peace,

18. I've always found Superman to be a punk, which is weird because
he's got more powers than Batman, which I liked, who has no superpowers of his own, and Spiderman, who I love.

I dunno.

And this Superman is prettier and sanitarier than Lois Lane, which disturbs me. I'll probably catch it on dvd.

47. UPDATE: My press preview pass came in the mail today! Hooray!
Unfortunately, there are no guests allowed by Warner Brothers, so I'll be seeing it without my husband on Thursday morning -- there should be many other members of the Portland press there.

We've also been warned that our reviews are EMBARGOED (held) on radio, TV and print -- until opening day, Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

Back at you next week with a review!

In peace,

56. NNadir, you must be very intelligent if your "hobby" is --
nuclear physics. Whoa!

Just curious: What do you do for entertainment?

If you went to the movie, would you be inclined to see the improbability of the whole thing at its core? (Or you just don't like theater popcorn? :sarcasm:)

Most of us kind of grew up on comic books -- don't know how old you are, or what your profession is -- but there are those who see too deep and too much to find this sort of thing entertaining.

66. I don't know that it's any depth on my part.
I read Superman comics as a kid, too.

I like some movies, many of which aren't particularly deep and some which are not very realistic.

One of my favorite movies is "Groundhog Day." It was funny, witty and original.

Hollywood it seems to me, continually rehashes and remakes movies. It's a constant feast of self-imitation and after a while it's boring. Do we really need five or six Superman movies?

Generally, I don't like adventure movies or superhero movies. It's not a matter of special intelligence - I'm one of those people who is merely bright enough to undertand how unintelligent I really am. It's just a matter of personal taste that makes me not want to see Superman.

I will confess that I hated the movie "Titanic" though, on the grounds that it completely ignored the heat capacity of water. It would have been better if Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio had died of hypothermia inside the ship, while swimming around in the flooded hull. I estimate that they should have lasted about 2 or 3 minutes before dying. But that impression had more to do with the fact that they were marketing the movie as "realistic," and "true to history." I recall they made a big deal about spenting an extra brazillion dollars to refilm the sinking because the props were turning. If you're going to make that claim, Winslet dies of hypothermia.

Mostly, these days, when I see a movie, it's a kids movie. I've seen many of the Pokemon movies...sigh.

The things I enjoy, that entertain me, are playing with my kids, talking with my wife, reading nuclear engineering texts, and reading history, more or less in that order. I also feel really fortunate when I have time to ride my bike.

67. Hi, NNadir -- You sound like a wonderful guy, really.
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 01:01 PM by Radio_Lady

A man who really plays with his kids can be a rarity. Many men just don't have the time or inclination to do it! Some of the most fun I had with my children years ago was playing card games (or other games) with them, or taking them swimming -- my favorite thing!

It's true about movies -- a lot of the same themes come up again and again. "Groundhog Day" was a wonderful movie and we've seen it a couple of times.

Talking with your spouse? That is so very important, that you talk together for your whole married lives. Try to keep that capacity to exchange ideas with your spouse when you get older -- I like to find new topics and try not become an "old bore"! My husband and I have been talking together for 34 years -- sometimes I do hear the same thing over again, but I try to pretend as if I'm hearing it for the first time.

Bike riding? I used to ride my bike all over Manhattan -- to work, mostly, and then home to our apartment.

Thanks for your response. It was a pleasure to hear from you.

Warm regards -- on this last day of spring -- almost the first day of summer,...

PS. You may not have seen the movie "Flight Plan" -- but the idea was a little girl was kidnapped on an airplane and placed somewhere in the storage area where there would not have been any pressurization or heat. Of course, she is found alive and saved. Even with the somewhat limited scientific knowledge that I have, this irrational point of the movie was unacceptable to me and I rejected the whole film as well. "Suspension of disbelief" is critical to viewing and understanding most movies; of course, the superhero and action movies make their own rules, but people can see right through most of these concepts. You must know that Hollywood makes a majority of movies for young single males ages 18 to 35, the main target audience.

64. Hell, yes! It's the metaphor of Superman I love.
That a man may be something more than he seems, that a man may be more complex than expected, and that the Gods and Stories of Old are still real.

This movie may, admittedly, completely suck -- but I'm willing to give it a chance. Superman's a good metaphor, when written well, and one that becomes increasingly relevant as modern society continues its downward path.

Here's hoping for the best...

65. don't think so - i hate seeing ads for it on every item in the market
and the fellow who's playing superman doesn't appeal to me. he's cute, alright, but in the pictures his eyes seem kind
of dead. there's no humor or life in them. he looks really serious, and i think that kind of role requires a sense of humor.

they'll never replace christopher reeve - you could tell he had a big heart

I wouldn't mind seeing it at the theater but we have a kidlet and no babysitters, so we can't. My daughter is 4 and just would not do well in a theater yet, so we won't inflict her on other moviegoers, it would be neither fair nor nice on our part. From what I've seen and read though, it looks like an interesting movie.

Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 06:00 PM by Radio_Lady
too, when I was a young mother with small children.

That was back in 1968 (pregnant and then Linda was born), 1969 (we moved and David was born), 1970 (husband told me he didn't love me anymore, I split with the kids and lived alone in Hendersonville, NC most of the year), 1971 (finally divorced and working nights and days) and part of 1972 (working on a politically oriented radio show).

My head was in a fog of diapers most of the time. You'll be back to moviegoing soon.

Incidentally, we have movie theaters here in Portland, Oregon, with "cry baby" rooms -- do you know what they are? Kind of interesting for young parents, I would think.

Here's a discussion of "babies at the movies" -- interesting stuff!

On edit:

I had never heard the word "retcon" before today.

Here's the scoop on it:

retcon: /ret´kon/

1. n. The common situation in pulp fiction (esp. comics or soap operas) where a new story ‘reveals’ things about events in previous stories, usually leaving the ‘facts’ the same (thus preserving continuity) while completely changing their interpretation. For example, revealing that a whole season of Dallas was a dream was a retcon.

2. vt. To write such a story about a character or fictitious object. “Byrne has retconned Superman's cape so that it is no longer unbreakable.” “Marvelman's old adventures were retconned into synthetic dreams.” “Swamp Thing was retconned from a transformed person into a sentient vegetable.”

<1993 update: some comics fans on the net now claim that retcon was independently in use in comics fandom before rec.arts.comics, and have citations from around 1981. In lexicography, nothing is ever simple. —ESR>

119. Hey, why not? It worked for "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" --
-- and you should have seen the group of folks in line for one of the the recent Harry Potter movies. We went to see "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" and when we came out after 10 PM, there were all kinds of Potter fans sleeping in the foyer of the theater, dressed and ready to roll! It's Halloween every day at the movies!

Have a great time, you "misplaced Alaskan now in Missouri" -- THERE'S a story there, and I wish I knew it.

In peace,

120. I remember Kevin Smith bemoaned the mechanical spider angle.
This was in an interview with Howard Stern back in 2000. He said that the producer was obsessed with the spider, and was trying to find any way to get it into the film, much to Smith's chagrin.

The mechanical spider finally surfaced in "Wild Wild West."

That said, this superman film looks interesting. I wouldn't mind checking it out.

Bryan Singer overcame a path paved with kryptonite to bring back Superman

By SCOTT FOUNDAS
Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 12:00 pm

Superman Returns director Bryan Singer is sitting on the wrong side of the camera. It’s an early June afternoon on Stage 17 of the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, and a photographer is about to take Singer’s picture for the purposes of this article. But were you to stumble in unawares, you might sooner think that the slender, boyishly good-looking man seated in a director’s chair and sporting a distressed Superman T-shirt was an actor auditioning for a role rather than the director behind this studio’s $200 million revival of a long-dormant superhero franchise. Then again, looks can be deceiving. Just ask Clark Kent.

A few hours from now, Singer’s Superman Returns will have its first press preview — and despite weeks of round-the-clock sound mixing, color timing and visual-effects sessions, there’s still more work to be done, and more long nights ahead. “This particular film, at this particular time, was a unique grind,” Singer had told me earlier, noting that he shot Superman Returns halfway around the world in Australia while simultaneously executive producing a six-hour miniseries (The Triangle) for TV’s Sci-Fi Channel and the hit medical drama House on Fox. But today, Singer puts on a game face. He jokes with the photographer about being scrawny and out-of-shape for a guy in a Superman shirt. Then, as the session nears its end, he suddenly leaps out of his chair, picks it up with both hands and holds it proudly above his head while a few more pictures are snapped. It’s the least of the heavy lifting Singer has been doing of late.

After a decade in development hell and a revolving door of directors (Tim Burton, Michael Bay, Wolfgang Petersen and Brett Ratner among them), far-flung concepts (from the death-and-resurrection of Superman to a Superman-vs.-Batman celebrity death match) and potential Supermen (including Nicolas Cage, Brendan Fraser, Paul Walker and Josh Hartnett), Superman Returns finally took flight under Singer’s helm last spring and is now set to land in theaters across the globe on June 28, two decades after the caped crusader’s last big-screen adventure. Then, millions of fans will weigh in with their verdicts — a force, Singer acknowledges, potentially more powerful than kryptonite. “Whenever you take any kind of franchise and you play it out, it starts to go into a temporary coma,” he says, “and when that happens, it takes a while, years even, for an audience to be welcoming to its return.”

The stories are the stuff of Hollywood legend: How a charismatic (if hubristic) producer named Alexander Salkind, who made movies in Mexico in the 1940s and had a hand in Orson Welles’ The Trial, together with his son Ilya hired a plane to fly a banner over the 1974 Cannes Film Festival announcing the production of a big-budget Superman movie. How Godfather author Mario Puzo delivered a 500-page screenplay, which was subsequently rewritten by four other writers. How Marlon Brando was recruited to play Superman’s intergalactic father, Jor-El, for a then-astronomical $4 million plus 11 percent of box-office receipts. And how the arduous $50 million shoot dragged on for 16 months, with upward of seven production units filming scenes on three continents. But Superman nevertheless shot off into the stratosphere. Directed by former television director Richard Donner and starring unknown New York stage actor Christopher Reeve in the title role, the movie became the smash hit of the Christmas 1978 season, taking in more than $300 million at the worldwide box office. Among those standing in line to see it was a 12-year-old Bryan Singer.
