Ever had a weird night call? |
|
I did tonight!
I'm living with my folks, and we have caller ID to screen out the telemarketers. Usually we see their number at best but no name. When it says Unknown Caller and also gives no number, I kind of assume they're out of the country. In any case, they've always been good about not calling after 8pm.
Tonight, we got a call at 10:30pm. It was the unknown caller/no number variety. When mom answered (thinking it'd be family at that time of night), she said the other person said something, but it was so fast that she didn't understand (or they weren't speaking English). Indian or Pakistani accent, she guesses. Wasn't a hello or her name, either. She hung up and they didn't call back. She'd spoken briefly with a really rude marketer a few weeks ago, though, who'd called at a more reasonable hour and had a similar accent.
What is it about a night call that gives me anxiety? Ah, well. This kind of thing ever happened to anyone else? :P

2. I understand the disquiet it can cause |
|
When I was a kid in the 70s and living inn a rural place, we had really loud phone bells, and those were very alarming.
Since then however, I've turned into a very sound sleeper, and don't usually hear the phone while I'm asleep...the ringer is also set to low.
Hope you get over your jitters... :)

I suppose it was the nature of the call that made me nervous. Why are they calling us if they don't speak English, and why in the middle of the night? :P
Then again, they didn't call right back (or at all), and I suppose they would have if it weren't a sales call or wrong number.

3. I had a prank caller once at about 1 AM |
|
I lived in a small town just east of Austin. About one the phone rang. It was some teenager with one of the usual "Is your refridgerator running?" kind of lines. I laughed and asked how bored he had to be to be doing this at one am. "Pretty bored," he said, "but what do you expect in Elgin?"
We talked about an hour. His girlfriend got on the line for a while, too. The kid was bored, a bit racist, real small town. Nice enough guy, otherwise. The next morning my spouse and I decided to move out of that town before our daughter reached first grade, though!

5. I used to get calls on my old cell in the middle of the night. |
|
This girl would call at 3 or 4 in the morning every night and ask for Derek. I never knew anyone by that name, and I would tell her so, but she'd insist there was a Derek at that number. She'd get angry about it — she'd demand to speak to Derek. She'd accuse me of lying to her about his being there. She even once said she could hear him laughing in the background when no one was there.
After awhile I started turning my cell off when I went to bed, and a few months after that I got a new number altogether.
I wonder if she ever found Derek.

6. A couple decades ago I received a call at around 2 am - |
|
Back when I was active Navy and working the eve shift. With no caller I.D. and there having been a particularly rough time at our small training base (summer brownouts), I thought "oh no, another emergency".
It was a long distance operator from Brazil, speaking spanish. To a very drunk man whom I assumed from what I could vaguely understand was trying to get ahold of his friends somewhere in Europe and was totally screwed up on his telephone numbers. When I said hello, he switched to broken, accented English and started chatting me up after settling with the operator. Seems he won big in a couple casinos in Rio de Janeiro and was celebrating. Boy was he celebrating. And almost charming in a drunk European fashion. He was (supposedly) from somewhere around Cannes. He was very willing to come up to San Diego and take me on a cruise, because of my voice and how "nice I sounded". (Half asleep, relieved and in fairly good humor that it wasn't a problem at work - yeah I probably sounded very sexy to him)
I almost took him up on it; I was in my late 20's at the time and in good shape. But with my luck, he was just one of those gigolos looking for a rich honey to keep him, instead of the other way around...and I had two years left on that enlistment and a security clearance to think about.
Yeah, and the FBI probably has that phone call on file, too.
