Regarding TV chefs. Do any of them actually LIKE to cook?
Inspired by a great blog post I read.

It seems as though most of them look at cooking as something to be rushed through as quickly as possible.

Or maybe that is just the trend thanks to Rachel Ray. I watched her show yesterday and she was actually exhausted. She was sighing with the drudgery of it all. Flying around the kitchen, carrying more items than is humanly possible. Trying her damndest to be chipper and perky and high energy. All the while, her expression said "I really only look upon cooking as something to rush through so I can write more cookbooks and make more money!"

Emeril-I don't get a big "I LOVE food and cooking" vibe from him.

Giaada DeLaurentis- she seems to love cooking.

Paula Deen-LOVES food and cooking.

Martha Stewart-loathes food and cooking.

Ina Garten- I think she is burned out.

Molto Mario-LOVES food and cooking.

Shamdra Lee- LOVES drinking while cooking. Never eats her horrid concoctions. Gets a better drunk that way.

Bobby Flay-Strictly in it for the cash and glam. Now anyway.

1. Well, resturant cooking
is different than cooking at home because you like it. So they naturally approach it more like a job than us amateurs. And in a commercial kitchen, they object is to get it out to the customer as fast as possible.

Here's my list to continue:

Jacques Pepin - Enjoys cooking (has done serveral series with his daughter now)
Anthony Bourdain - Enjoys cooking/eating (now that he has the time to appreciate it all)
Rachel Ray - Yeah, I know, but you can't say she doesn't enjoy herself or her food.
Daisy cooks - She's on PBS, but she does look like she as a whole lot of fun with latin food.
The entire staff of Cooks' Illustrated America's Test Kitchen - Booyahh!!!

3. Anthony Bourdain
A damned culinary genius. Understands the value of knowing the culture that makes the cuisine.

5. And is absolutely in love with both the cultural and culinary aspects.
Definitely a sensualist. Truly loves what he does.

6. Tony's my foodie crush and, in fact
if I were to die and come back as a guy, I'd want to BE Tony Bourdain.

4. Pretty decent assesment, it seems.
Though I'd quibble a little about Flay -- yeah, his persona can be annoying at times, and he's definitely interested in the fame; but he clearly loves what he's doing.

I'm not sure if I'd limit "what he's doing" to food and cooking, though. He seems to enjoy the whole process of being a "food star." Always laughing on Iron Chef America, always joking around on his show -- I think he "gets it" that he's just some punk New Yorker who got lucky and is now a celebrity for no other reason than because he's a pretty good cook. I think he understands his place in the world, and likes it.

On the other hand, I used to find Emeril simply annoying, now I find him depressing. I think he also knows his place in the world: as a cliche. I think he has nightmares about saying "bam gahlic pork fat r00lz" over and over again; and every night when he goes to bed he prays for death to come soflty as he sleeps.
