1. AVG
I've used it for years. The free version is very good, so try that first. It will probably be all you need.

http://www.grisoft.com

We even use it at work, at a Boeing subsidiary.

3. I tried AVG before, but
it seemed "too active" meaning it tripped over everything. Is it better now?

5. I have never had a problem with it.
I have been using it for years. McAfee, Norton/Symantec are all system hogs and seem to cause more problems than they are worth. I use Spybot, Crap Cleaner and AVG religiously. I have never had a problem with spyware, crappy, left-over code or viruses in years.

7. Spybot is a good spyware remover.
So is Spy Sweeper. Spyware Doctor is also a very good program that will get stuff even Spy Sweeper will not. So good that I actually bought it. However, it's a hog running so I only use it when I fear a serious problem. It does not work reliably on my ME laptop.

6. Tripped?
Running, it takes up much less resources than Norton or that pile of steaming code-crap McAfee. I use PCs for AutoCAD and anything that interferes with the operation gets my immediate attention. Any slowdown, mouse pointer skipping, delays in commands just drive me nuts. I hacked my IT-controlled machine at work to disable McAffee because it was so damn intrusive. They put on Avg and it was never a problem.

AVG does not have a significant impact on anything unless it's doing a sweep. I set it up at home to run a complete scan at 9PM when I am usually in the bedroom snuggling with Ms. OR watching da tube. If I am on when it is runnin a scan I simply stop the sacn. It'll scan tomorrow.

Updates can be automated or the systray icon with go monochrome and you can update manually. Updates are free.

The free AVG also includes email scanning for Outlook and Outlook Express. I suppose it would also work with Netscape/Firefox, but I prefer OE.

:hi:

4. Tried McAfee?
They are ok, just hate it when your subscription is up, they bug you to death til you renew.

9. McAfee let one get through the gates for me the other day but
on the whole it's been OK.

8. Go with NOD32; free 30-day tryout at download.com
Unfortunately McAfee (recommended above) also blows, or did on my previous computer. NOD32 is supposed to be the best, currently.
