Imagine, if you will, that you are browsing through the political ection of your favorite bookstre looking for the latest work from Noam Chomsky, or even Al Franken. he suddenly you are forced to turn away from the shelf because there it is: Anne Coulter glaring at you. Do you:

1. Which political part? The erection, the section....?
I think we should drop non-distructive "love notes"
on Ann's books.

then forget it exists as I move on to something worthwhile.

6. Laughter is the only good response, in my opinion
In a very "who takes this shit seriously?" kind of way.

8. It's called bookstore activism...
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 11:59 PM by Lindsey
I've been doin' it since '01. I'll take "their" books and replace them with ours. I normally put theirs behind a bunch of others in another section of the stores. Oh yea, I always buy one of ours.

11. Well, I won't damage the book or disrupt the store's display, but I
usually move to another location in the store entirely. Ann's image gives me migraines.

16. Talk VERY loudly about Coulter, complain about the bookstore, walk out,
- I mean, I can talk LOUD AS HELL! - :D Then call the manager and the manager's manager and complain for as long as they can take it. Then do it again and get friends to do the same.

Watch how fast her books disappear from the shelves. ;)

As completely wretched as her opinions are, she still has the First Amendment rights to express them.

20. We have a winner.
A reasonable opinion.

I've never read any her work, and going by the coverage this latest book has had in the British press I don't know that my stomach would manage to cope with me reading it. But I don't see that I need to play silly games, making more work for book-store employees, to prove anything.

21. KW, TJ and I are on the same page
I burn with fury, but everyone has a right to express their views and everyone has a right to read them.

It's called freedom and it's precious.

But Ann really pisses me off....

29. I hope you are not calling my poll
"unreasonable" or "silly" ... well, actually, silly" applies.

I usually put another book in front of hers because her picture invariably makes me nausous and besides she is just creepy. It makes it possible for me to enjoy my first amendment right to browse other books in that section without throwing up.

As to this notion in various posts, that it makes more work for the bookstore empoyees, my recollection of being a bookstore employee is that it was pretty much continually replacing, readjusting, reorganizing, etc. etc. This would be the case with OR WITHOUT having to deal w/ AC.

34. But then look at the Dixie Chicks
Radio stations refusing to play their music, which they would ordinarily play, just to try to punish them for criticizing *?

Yet Mann Coulter would not agree with you that people who disagree with her should have First Amendment rights.

So where's the equivalent treatment for Mannthrax? Aren't there some bookstores refusing to carry her book? I would tend to think bookstore owners are liberal leaning, but that's just a hunch.

19. I find Clinton books ...

Preferably about or by Hillary, but any ol' Clinton book will do, and I use them to cover the Coulter books.

There's a local bookstore I go to about once a week, and it apparently hasn't sold a Coulter book in months. I also dog-ear the things, and none of my dog-ears are missing.

24. I'm very tempted to hide the book from public viewing
But I try to place it back as neatly and immaculately on the shelf as I found it because, as much as I abhor and detest the dreadful woman, I don't believe in sabotaging public property nor denying people the right to read different viewpoints. But I will concede that it's a terrible struggle sometimes

27. As a former bookstore employee, that is pretty immature and annoying
At the store I worked at, it was almost always the freeper types who would do the vandalizing. Once, I caught someone red-handed tearing the front covers of "The Bush Hater's Handbook". He destroyed about eight of them until he saw me, after which he quickly walked out of the store. Most often, the Bush fans would hide the Michael Moore books, or put an Ann Coulter title in front of an Al Franken title.

Whatever you do, DON'T play games with the books in a bookstore; all you're doing is causing headaches for the people who have to shelve and maintain them.

30. My poll did not advocate
any of these reactions. I just have a weak stomach and get queasy when I see her picture. I put some of the other stuff in there because someone mentioned tearing her dust jackets in another thread.

I definitely am in opposition to doing anything illegal or destructive. AC herself does enough of that.

I too am a former bookstore employee (Brentanos), and I always found pretty much the same thing. Most of the work that I had to do relative to reorganizing, etc. was in the science fiction section.

33. But come on, even as employee, wouldn't you kind of smile
if it was just somebody putting a liberal book in front. Or putting it up on a high shelf? I think I would smile and just leave it that way.

in the political section of Hastings last Tuesday to look for a copy of Armed Madhouse. Eeewwww....should have gone prepared with some protective garlic. Then I couldn't find Armed Madhouse, until I scooted over the the new arrivals section. It was there but I didn't see Coulter's book there.

32. I ignore it, because ...
When it comes to people like Coulter, Limbaugh, O'Reilly and so forth ... They don't get their jollies off of spewing hatred. No, they get their jollies off of the attention they receive by doing that.

I feel that the most grievous wound one can inflict upon such people is to simply not acknowledge them. Walk right past them on the street without even looking at them. Ignore their books, change the channel when they're on TV. Behave as though they don't even exist.
